Upsets in the Big Ten Conference heads the news. Upset at Ohio State, Wisconsin is out of the running for the BCS National Championship. In fact, right now, they are second in their own Big Ten division…and Russell Wilson can also forget about the Heisman. Also, upset at Nebraska, Michigan State must re-group and focus on getting to the Big Ten championship game.

Here are the Five Things I Learned About College Football last weekend:

Southern Cal's Matt Barkley is a great pro prospect

1. USC is improving weekly.  In their triple overtime loss to No. 4 Stanford, I was really impressed at how the Trojans handled everything. Matt Barkley played well at QB, and solidified his NFL draft chances. The Men of Troy also did a very good job on defense. They did what no team has been able to do to Stanford…took a lead (in fact, a ten-point lead in the second quarter) over the Cardinal. Facing adversity, and 93,607 raucus fans, Andrew Luck showed why he will be the first pick of the 2012 NFL draft. He led his team on a game-tying 76-yard drive, culminating with a TD with 38 seconds to play in regulation. This after throwing a Pick-Six. How’s that for picking yourself up off the mat! Barkley said, after the game, “As a player, it was the most energetic, most electric crowd I’ve ever seen at the Coliseum.” It was.

Stanford's Andrew Luck overcame adversity in leading the Cardinal to a win

2. Stanford may be the best team equipped to handle the SEC.  A pro-style offense and a tough defense gives them the edge over a favorite of mine, Oklahoma State. OSU has blown-out seven of eight opponents this year, and their defense has played well…but let’s see them do it game after game against top competition. Stanford’s defense wants to be as well-known as their offense, and shows every indication they can. They went up against a quality QB in USC’s Barkley and, in my opinion, did a nice job.

Sporting the 1961 throwback uniform, Ohio State's Devin Smith catches the game-winning touchdown against Wisconsin

3. The Big Ten is fascinating…Ohio State beat Wisconsin by stopping the Badgers’ vaunted running game – holding them to just 89 yards. This Buckeyes team looks dangerous…They, too, have two losses in conference, but to beat Wisconsin like they did…they need to think very seriously about removing the interim title in front of Coach Luke Fickell’s name. Anyway, Urban Meyer looks like he may be enjoying being up in the broadcast booth.

Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones had a terrific game against Kansas State

4. The Big 12 is heading for a great finish.  Bedlam will decide it…and Oklahoma must be just sick about losing two weeks ago to Texas Tech, especially in light of Iowa State’s rout of Tech on Saturday. Landry Jones passed for 505 yards as the Sooners crushed previously unbeaten Kansas State, 59-24…and K-State actually had a lead in that game. Meanwhile in Stillwater, Oklahoma State continues to throttle opponents. Brandon Weeden had just a fair day (24-36 for 274 yards) but Baylor’s QB, Robert Griffin III had a spectacular day exploiting the Cowboys’ defense (33-50 for 425 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT’s). Overall the Pokes gave up 622 yards, and are ranked 111th in the nation. But defense just isn’t important to the Pokes…passing and rushing are. They give up lots of yards, but in the Red Zone, they get tough. Imagine passing for 425 yards and being crushed…That’s what happened Saturday.

5. Is everyone just waiting until Saturday night?  LSU at Alabama…winner to go to the BSC National Championship game, unless something very strange happens. I think this will be a low-scoring, highly-tense game. The game is in Alabama, so advantage Crimson Tide. LSU is getting 4.5 points right now. I think after the upsets we saw last week, whoever wins this game will not be considered an upset. Two great defenses and two interesting offenses. LSU will alternate quarterbacks and that might keep Bama on its toes. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I’ll be back Thursday with my look ahead at the Top Five Games To Watch – Week 10!
