College Football's Top RBs: By Conference

With eight of the Top 10 rushing leaders from 2007 leaving college football behind it brings us to a very interesting debate about who is left to lead their teams from the backfield. Here is a breakdown of the best running backs by conference....

Ore is gone from VT. Another loser from Beamer!

Do you know why? I just heard "violation of team rules"? Don't know if there was anything else that was said about it....

Orr is still at VaTech and Hill is still at Wisc? Those were the other two I couldn't remember. Plus I was right that spiller was still at clemson but I forgot that James Davis was the other half of that combo...Great article

Spiller & Davis are good backs...keep an eye out for the guys..!

Here we go Beanie....................

One of the best pictures I have seen in a long time....so appropriate

Orr is not Tech, he is playing DIII ball at West Liberty College in WV.

You need to look at the intangibles when talking about Shady McCoy. Pitt was w/o it's all conference WR, lost it's starting QB in the opener and had shaky O-line play at best all year. Consider these factors and then look at the numbers McCoy put up at Pitt...he was virtually all we had offensively.
Take all that I've stated and the very opposite is true for Moreno. Knowshon had every advantage that McCoy didn't and the numbers were quite close. I dig Moreno, he is a sure fire big time back but really, put McCoy in an established program like Georgia and he sets the world on fire!
No doubt I am biased in Pitt's favor but even so, Shady is one of the top two, if not the best back in the country...the kid is an excellent receiver as well.

That's a pretty bold statement, and biased at best. Shady doesnt play the teams Moreno plays week to week.. no-where near. I'm not saying he's not a good back, but I wouldnt go and compare him to Moreno...not yet!

Actually you might want to look at the defensive statistics of the teams each guy played before saying his statement was bold. Here are the teams Pitt played and their rushing defense rankings: UVA (13), WVU (18), Cincy (19), Mich St (30), USF (34), Rutgers (60), UConn (62), Lville (72), Navy (81), EMU (97), Cuse (108). The only team not listed is I-AA Grambling State who was one of the best run stopping teams in their division allowing about 100 yds/game.

I'll do the same thing for Georgia...UF (10), GT (20), Bama (28), Auburn (29), Vandy (32), OK State (56), Tenn (69), UK (94), Troy (95), Ole Miss (101), South Carolina (110). The only team not listed here was lowly Western Carolina who allowed well over 200 yards per game on the ground.

I am not taking anything away from Moreno because he is sick nasty, there are no 2 ways around it, but cefron made some excellent points. Shady was not able to play behind a Heisman hopefull QB like Matt Stafford. He had to play behind a fellow rookie and an injury depleted WR corp. The level of play in the Big East is much higher than most people think, especially defensively.

Play well boys, but it would not be for any such goals . You just play its quit amazing. My wishes to all.

Knowshon will impress...

Georgia's Athletic Treatment team chimes in and lets TheBearDown know...I tend to agree that McCoy is a great back but Moreno is a great back playing in a much tougher league. Does that mean McCoy couldn't stack up in the SEC...no...but Moreno should get credit for earning his a little tougher and harder

Moreno will have the tougher hill to climb this season adding Arizona state (21st rush defense in 07) and LSU (12th.) Pitt's toughest matchups based on 2007's stats will be WVU, Cincy, and Iowa (24th.) Non conference games look a little easier for Pitt as well. Bowling Green was 109th last year, Buffalo 79th, and Notre Dame was 96th. UGA draws a stingy Central Michigan team who ranked 57th a year ago, and a tough I-AA team in Georgia Southern who allowed 150/yds a game last season.

A couple points to note in regards to Pitt: they lost 2 of their best linemen in Otah and McGlynn, but should have ample replacements. Lucas Nix was a huge signing and Jason Pinkston is going to be a stud. They also return Biletnikoff candidate Kinder, 4 healthy options at QB with Stull leading the way and Bostick/Cross waiting in the wings. And their defense should give them some great field position as well. Both teams are going to be exciting to watch, how can they not be with those 2 guys in the backfield?

I believe Moreno will do very well because GEORGIA has more balance with Stafford at QB and if the Line holds Moreno could be the next best back that Georgia has ever had next to #34

Mike Goodson at TX A&M should have a good year in the Big 12. He has tremendous quickness and hits the holes like lightning. I think Mike Sherman's offensive philosophy and moving Javorski Lane to fullback will help this kid burst out with a big year this year. DeMarco Murray from OU should have a tremendous year, too, with that offensive line as long as he can stay healthy. They have a new recruit at OU named Justin Johnson who is going to make a mark as a freshman this year.
