Akron, OH (Sports Network) - Nate Davis threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Ball State Cardinals to a 41-24 victory over the Akron Zips in a Mid-American Conference showdown at the Rubber Bowl.
Davis completed 24-of-36 to pace the Cardinals (3-0, 1-0 MAC) in the victory, while MiQuale Lewis gained 154 yards on the ground for Ball State. Lewis found the end zone twice, and Darius Hill caught four balls for 82 yards and a score.
Chris Jacquemain threw for 269 yards and a score for the Zips (1-2, 0-1), but the signal caller was also guilty of four costly interceptions in the loss. Andrew Johnson tallied 50 yards and a score on just seven carries for Akron, and Deryn Bowser caught eight passes for 117 yards.
The Cardinals wasted little time in the early going, capping a five-play, 68- yard opening drive with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Briggs Orsbon to jump out to a 7-0 lead.
A 34-yard field goal by Igor Iveeljic cut Ball State's lead to 7-3.
Ball State took a 10-3 lead early in the second period, as Ian McGarvey connected on a 31-yard field goal.
Alex Allen tied the contest for the Zips minutes later with a five-yard run.
The Cardinals regained the lead late in the frame with a three-yard run by Lewis.
Ball State padded its advantage early in the third, as Sean Baker recovered a fumble and returned the loose ball 33 yards to give the Cardinals a 24-10 lead.
The Cardinals continued to pour it on late in that third period, as Lewis scampered into the end zone on a two-yard run to make it 31-10.
Johnson gave the Zips their second touchdown of the afternoon early in the final period with a 26-yard run.
A 25-yard pass from Davis to Hill gave the Cardinals a 38-17 lead.
Jacquemain found Andre Jones for a 13-yard touchdown pass midway through the frame that cut the Cardinal lead to 38-24.
A 32-yard field goal from McGarvey with 3:04 remaining in the contest proved to represent the final points, as Ball State won, 41-24.
The Cardinals held the ball for nearly 36 minutes in the clash, as a 9-of-16 effort on third down conversion attempts certainly helped the cause.
