GAME NOTES: A couple of programs meeting for the first-ever time on the gridiron collide in Chestnut Hill this weekend, as the UCF Knights tussle with the Boston College Eagles in non-conference play at Alumni Stadium. The Knights enter the game an even 1-1 on the young season, with both of their bouts coming at home. After blanking Football Championship Subdivision member South Carolina State, 17-0 in the opener, UCF was outlasted in overtime by nationally-ranked South Florida, 31-24, on September 6th. With the loss in their last game, the Knights fell to 0-5 in overtime games since joining the FBS ranks in 1996. As for BC, it is also coming off a bye week and a loss. Much like UCF, the Eagles opened the season with a shut out of Kent State (21-0) prior to losing a 19-16 decision to ACC foe Georgia Tech on September 6th. The loss to Georgia Tech was the first of three straight games at home for BC, which will wrap its stand against Rhode Island on September 27th.
The Knights have been far from impressive on the offensive side of the ball thus far, but they did manage a pair of touchdowns in the final three minutes of their last game to force overtime against USF at 24-24. In the extra period though, UCF showed its struggles by failing to even record a first down, giving USF the win after it had scored on its possession. The Knights managed only 226 total yards versus USF and that came one week after opening the season with a modest 318-yard effort versus a much lesser opponent in SCSU. Michael Greco however, showed an improvement from the opener, completing 17-of-32 pass attempts for 150 yards and two scores versus USF. He also led the team with 51 rushing yards on six carries. Greco, in his first season running the show, posted just 90 passing yards and 57 rushing with no touchdowns in the opener. Rocky Ross was his main target in the last outing, making eight catches for 90 yards and a score.
The strength of this UCF team is its defense, which was pushed around a bit by USF, but made some big plays to keep the squad's hopes alive. The Knights, who limited SCSU to just 126 total yards in a shutout opening win, surrendered 504 total yards to USF and although that is far too much, the unit did come up with a pair of interceptions and three sacks. The defense also held USF scoreless in the fourth quarter, but it did allow a 25-yard touchdown pass in overtime. Lawrence Young paced the defense in the loss to USF with eight tackles, 3.5 TFLs and a sack.
BC's offense was shut down by Tech in its last outing, as the Eagles were limited to just 262 total yards, including only 120 rushing, and one touchdown in a loss. It was a step in the wrong direction for the Eagles, who amassed 336 total yards, including 230 on the ground, in an opening win over Kent State. The Eagles also turned over the ball three times last game after committing no miscues in the opener. Quarterback Chris Crane was roughed up by Tech, completing just 18-of-35 pass attempts for only 142 yards and a score. He also committed three turnovers while being sacked three times. It was a poor showing by Crane, who threw for 106 yards and rushed for 47 yards and two scores in the opener. After leading the team with 74 rushing yards and a touchdown in the opener, Jeff Smith was limited to just 25 yards on 10 carries by the Yellow Jackets.
Defensively, the Eagles have been solid thus far, as they held Kent State to just 260 total yards and Georgia Tech to only 235 yards. The unit forced three turnovers in both outings, while recording a combined five sacks. BC's defense however, did up 43-yard touchdown run to GT midway through the fourth quarter and that big play made the difference in a 19-16 loss. Mark Herzlich guided the Eagles in the loss with 12 tackles and a forced fumble. It was a nice follow up for Herzlich, who had five stops and an interception in the opener.
Neither of these programs are capable of lighting up the scoreboard, so expect a low scoring game this weekend. The Eagles have the edge playing at home and their defense is a bit better and that should help them come out on top.
