East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - It was the Javon Ringer show in East Lansing this afternoon, as the running back for Michigan State rushed for 135 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, leading the Spartans to a commanding 42-10 victory over the Eastern Michigan Eagles at Spartan Stadium.

Andre Anderson added 75 rushing yards for Michigan State (1-1), while Brian Hoyer completed just 8-of-12 passes for 148 yards in the victory.

Quarterback Andy Schmitt only completed 11-of-23 passes for 111 yards in the loss for EMU (1-1), but the signal caller also added 46 rushing yards and one touchdown.

The Spartans took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter when Ringer rumbled into the end zone on a four-yard run.

Just seconds into the second stanza, Schmitt scored on a three-yard touchdown run, tying the score at seven apiece.

However, the rest of the quarter was dominated by Ringer, who scored on runs of six and two yards, respectively. The strong play of Ringer sent the Spartans into the break with a 21-7 lead.

Late in the third quarter the Spartans capped off a seven-play, 99-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge by Ringer.

Michigan State extended its lead to 35-7 early in the final frame when Ringer scored his fifth and final touchdown with a two-yard run.

Surprisingly someone other than Ringer scored a rushing touchdown for Michigan State, as Ashton Leggett crossed the goal line from four yards out, pushing MSU's lead to 42-7 late in the fourth quarter.

Joe Carithers nailed a 24-yard field goal for EMU with under two minutes remaining in regulation, but it was too little, too late for the Eagles who suffered a 32-point setback.

GAME NOTES: The Michigan State Spartans will try to rebound from a tough season-opening loss when they host the Eastern Michigan Eagles this Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

The Eagles clobbered Indiana State this past Thursday, posting a 52-0 victory in their season-opener. It was the first season-opening win for EMU since 2004. The Eagles have not fared well against the Big Ten and has not won a single game in 23 tries against the conference.

As for the Spartans they kicked their season off on the west coast, and fell victim to the California Golden Bears, 38-31. While the Eagles have struggled against Big Ten foes, the Spartans have flourished against teams from the MAC, posting a stellar 36-6-2 ledger, and have won 14 consecutive games against teams from that conference.

The Spartans have dominated the all-time series against Eastern Michigan, winning all seven meetings between the two schools.

The Eagles soared over Indiana State in the their season-opener, scoring 52 points, the most by an EMU squad since 2004. The Eagles used a heavy dose of ground work in the victory, pounding Indiana State for 413 rushing yards. Overall, EMU finished with 637 yards and racked up 30 first downs, 19 of which came via the run. EMU only convert 5-of-12 third down attempts in the contest, but was a perfect 7-of-7 on red zone chances. Terrence Blevins had a field day against the front seven for ISU, rumbling for 176 yards and two scores on 21 totes. Starting QB Andy Schmitt also had a strong performance, throwing for 160 yards and one touchdown on 15-of-20 passing.

Surprisingly the defense was just as impressive for EMU, as the Eagles limited Indiana State just 132 total yards, including just 75 yards on the ground. The defense's play against the run was shocking considering the Eagles were pounded on the ground last year for 196 ypg. The Eagles allowed only seven first downs in the contest, and also limited the Sycamores to just 3-of-16 on third down attempts. Brandon Downs only collected five tackles in the win for EMU, but the defensive lineman also collected 2.5 TFLs. Despite the strong effort this defensive unit will have to prove on a consistent basis that it is capable of improvement, especially since it has been one of the weakest for the past few seasons.

The Spartans might have been on the wrong end of a 38-31 decision, but the offensive unit for Michigan State was extremely productive in the season- opener. The Spartans finished with 402 total yards, but the bulk of that production came from the passing attack, as quarterback Brian Hoyer threw for 321 yards and one score. Mark Dell was the main target for MSU, as the wide out grabbed nine passes for a whopping 202 yards and one touchdown. The ground game was not as effective for Michigan State, as the Spartans were limited to just 81 yards on 31 carries (2.6 ypc). Javon Ringer did the majority of the damage out of the backfield, rushing for 81 yards and two scores on 27 totes. Overall Michigan State finished with 23 first downs, but converted just 6- of-16 third down attempts and only 3-of-5 red zone chances.

Unfortunately the defense had no success against the Golden Bears offense, as Michigan State allowed a whopping 467 total yards. The Spartans were abused by the run, allowing 203 yards on 5.6 ypc, and also struggled against the passing, surrendering another 264 yards. The defense was able to force two turnovers in the contest, but allowed Cal to collect 22 first downs, while also allowing the Golden Bears to convert on 4-of-5 red zone chances. Greg Jones led the squad with eight tackles in the contest, while Otis Wiley added six stops to go along with his two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

Obviously Eastern Michigan is not going to put forth the same effort this week against a much tougher Michigan State squad, and at the same time expect the Spartans to play much tighter defensively. This is a perfect matchup for Michigan State to build confidence after a tough loss.
