Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Maikon Bonani snuck a 43-yard field goal attempt inside the uprights as time expired to give the No. 19 South Florida Bulls a 37-34 victory over the No. 13 Kansas Jayhawks.
With 30 seconds to go and the score knotted at 34-34, Todd Reesing threw his first interception of the game to Bulls safety Nate Allen. Allen returned the pick 38 yards to the Kansas 27-yard line. After a one-yard rush to grind down the clock to two seconds, Bonani, who missed a 47-yard attempt in the first quarter, barely snuck the ball inside the right goalpost on a 43-yard attempt as the clock ran out to give the Bulls a three-point victory.
Matt Grothe went 32-of-45 passing for 338 yards and two touchdowns in addition to a rushing touchdown to lead the Bulls (3-0). A.J. Love led South Florida in receiving with 83 yards and a score while Taurus Johnson caught seven balls for 82 yards and a touchdown. Jamar Taylor added 72 yards on the ground and a score.
Reesing completed 34-of-51 pass attempts for 373 yards and three touchdowns and the pick at the end of the game while adding a score on the ground. Jonathan Wilson had 171 yards receiving on 10 catches with two touchdowns while Kerry Meier posted 120 yards receiving on 11 receptions for the Jayhawks (2-1).
Kansas got on the board with 8:51 to go in the first. Reesing converted a crucial 3rd-and-12 with a 12-yard scamper from his own 38 and another third down on South Florida's 47 to set up a 1st-and-10 on the 36-yard line. Wilson caught a pass out in the flat and was able to dodge numerous tackles to get in the end zone.
Jacob Branstetter added a 30-yard field goal with just under two minutes left in the opening frame to give Kansas a 10-0 lead.
South Florida cut the deficit to seven with 9:58 to go in the half, as Bonani nailed a 34-yard field goal.
Wilson caught a 56-yard pass from Reesing to get down to the Bulls' 14 with just under nine minutes left, and a couple minutes later Branstetter kicked a 28-yard field goal for a 13-3 Jayhawks edge.
Kansas took a commanding 20-3 lead as Reesing ran for a four-yard touchdown to complete a six-play, 65-yard drive with 3:24 left in the half.
Grothe answered with a 28-yard touchdown run of his own for the Bulls, making it 20-10 with 2:14 to go in the second quarter, capping a four-play, 64-yard drive.
Bonani hit a 23-yard field goal for the Bulls with 9:30 left in the third quarter to make it 20-13.
South Florida completed the comeback, tying the game at 20 on Johnson's 21- yard touchdown catch. Taylor got the Bulls deep into Kansas territory with a 20-yard scamper to the Jayhawks' 33 and Grothe threw a 12-yard strike to Jessie Hester on 3rd-and-10 to set up the touchdown with 4:22 left in the third.
Taylor gave the Bulls their first lead of the game, 27-20, with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter with a 13-yard touchdown run that capped a five-play, 71-yard drive that took only 2:08. Grothe completed a 22-yard pass and ran for 24 yards himself before Taylor's score.
Kansas went three-and-out on its next drive, and it didn't take long for South Florida to capitalize. After a two-yard loss, Grothe tossed a 37-yard touchdown to Love that give the Bulls a 34-20 lead with 13:59 left in the game.
The Jayhawks weren't done, however, as Reesing led the team down the field and found Wilson in the end zone from 18 yards out with 9:51 left. Reesing was 6- for-7 for 54 yards and the score on the drive to bring Kansas within seven.
After a three-and-out, Kansas got the ball back on their own 46 with just under eight minutes to go. Reesing threw a 19-yard pass to Wilson on the first play and a couple plays later faced a 3rd-and-20 on the Bulls' 45. The Jayhawks' quarterback was able to avert the pressure and find Meier for a 26- yard completion down to the 19-yard line.
After a five-yard penalty on the defense, Reesing completed the drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Angus Quigley with 5:32 remaining to tie the game.
