Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Thaddeus Lewis passed for 317 yards and three touchdowns and the Duke Blue Devils outlasted the Navy Midshipmen, 41-31, in a non-league affair at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Lewis converted 25-of-35 pass attempts and rushed for a team-best 41 yards, as Duke (2-1) snapped a four-game losing streak against Navy. Eron Riley was clearly his go-to-guy, finishing with eight catches for 137 yards and three scores.

For Navy (1-2), Jarod Bryant and Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada combined to complete 8-of-10 pass attempts for 150 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Tyree Barnes logged four receptions for 113 yards and score in the setback, while Shun White posted 112 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Duke opened the game's scoring with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Lewis to Riley just under six minutes into the first quarter.

Navy responded less than two minutes later, as White took off 73 yards for a touchdown.

Following a 46-yard field goal by Duke's Nick Maggio, the Mids grabbed a 14-10 lead behind a Kaheaku-Enhada 11-yard touchdown pass to Greg Shinego with under 30 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Midway through the second quarter the Blue Devils regained the lead, as Vincent Rey recovered a fumble and took it 37 yards to paydirt.

A 27-yard field goal by Navy's Matt Harmon late in the opening half knotted the score at 17-17. The Mids took the lead just over a minute later thanks to a Bobby Doyle 17-yard touchdown run.

Duke, though, had just enough time for Joe Surgan to nail a 52-yard field goal, leaving it behind just 24-20 at the break.

Lewis connected with Riley on a five-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter, giving the Blue Devils a 27-24 lead.

With just under two minutes left in the third quarter, Tielor Robinson extended Duke's advantage with a two-yard touchdown run.

Navy made it a 34-31 game with only five seconds left in the third period, as Bryant hit Barnes for a 68-yard touchdown pass.

The Blue Devils pushed their lead back to 10 with a 49-yard touchdown pass from Lewis to Riley less than five minutes into the final frame. Duke's defense would do the rest by holding Navy scoreless in the final 10-plus minutes.

Duke converted on 10-of-16 third down chances, while gaining 396 total yards in the win.

GAME NOTES: Navy will try to bounce back from its first loss of the season, when the Midshipmen travel to Durham to take on the Duke Blue Devils in a non- league affair at Wallace Wade Stadium. After pounding Towson, 41-13 in their season opener, the Midshipmen fell back to Earth this past weekend with a 35-23 setback to Ball State. Although Navy lost to Ball State on the road, the Middies are still 8-2 in their last 10 games away from home. As for the Blue Devils, they opened the season with an impressive 31-7 victory over James Madison. However, the success was short-lived as the team suffered a tough, 24-20 setback to Northwestern this past weekend. After this contest the Blue Devils will enjoy a bye week, which will be followed by an ACC showdown with Virginia. This will be the 38th matchup between the Middies and Blue Devils on the gridiron. Navy holds a 20-12-5 edge over Duke, and that includes a four- game winning streak.

The Middies churned out 346 yards this past weekend against Ball State, but it was not enough for Navy, as the Cardinals grabbed a 35-23 victory. Shun White, who broke the single-game rushing record in the opener with 348 yards, paced the ground game with 128 yards in the loss. Quarterback Jarod Bryant added 94 yards and two scores on 31 totes, while Eric Kettani also joined in on the fun, rushing for 92 yards on 11 carries. Two games into the season and the Middies' ground game looks to be in midseason form, as the squad is averaging 452.0 rushing ypg. Navy has done a tremendous job on third downs, converting 44 percent of its chances, and on top of that, the Middies have scored on 78 percent of their red zone opportunities.

The major concern for the Middies defensively is their performance against the pass, which was exploited by the Cardinals this past weekend. Navy was torched for 326 yards through the air, and although the defense grabbed two interceptions, it also allowed four passing TDs. Overall, the defense was punished for 488 total yards, and also gave up 26 first downs. Jeff Deliz led the way with 12 tackles in the contest, while Corey Johnson added 10 stops. Deliz has been the top performer for this defensive unit, as the safety is leading the team with 16 tackles to go along with two TFLs and one sack.

The Blue Devils were clicking on all cylinders this past weekend, but it was still not enough for Duke to overcome Northwestern. The offense was potent, racking up 472 total yards and 28 first downs. What hurt the Blue Devils, however, was their inability to make big plays, as the team finished just 5- of-16 on third down attempts. Thaddeus Lewis threw for 256 yards in the loss, but completed 24-of-42 passes. Lewis added 38 yards on the ground and scored once, but it was Clifford Harris who led the way, rushing for 86 yards and one TD on 18 totes. It was the second impressive showing for Harris, who opened the year with 95 yards and two scores against James Madison.

Surprisingly the Duke defense was able to limit NU's Tyrell Sutton just 66 rushing yards. However, the Blue Devils still allowed the explosive running back to score twice. Overall, Duke held Northwestern to just 77 rushing yards on 2.9 ypc. It was a much better effort against the run after allowing James Madison to rumble for 188 yards in the team's season-opener. Unfortunately the defensive unit was unable to make many big plays, finishing the game with zero turnovers and zero sacks. Duke was able to limit Northwestern to just 14 first downs, but at the same time the Blue Devils struggled inside their own 20-yard line, allowing the Wildcats to convert on all four of their red zone chances.

The Blue Devils are going to get a heavy dose of Navy's ground attack early and often. Although Duke shut down Sutton last weekend, do not expect a similar showing this time around.
