El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Colt McCoy threw four touchdown passes as 10th- ranked Texas beat up Texas-El Paso, 42-13, at the Sun Bowl.
McCoy completed 20-of-29 passes for 282 yards and a pick while Quan Cosby had eight catches for 154 yards and a score for the Longhorns (2-0), who have scored 94 points in their first two games. Foswhitt Whittaker had 12 carries for 72 yards and Cody Johnson added a rushing touchdown in the win.
Trevor Vittatoe went 25-for-46 with 267 yards and a score and Terrell Jackson had 94 yards on 17 carries for the Miners (0-2), who have lost nine games in a row to ranked opponents.
The Miners started the game with the ball and went down the field for 67 yards, but the drive stalled at the Texas 13 and a 30-yard field goal from Jose Martinez gave the team an early 3-0 lead.
After holding the Longhorns to a three-and-out, Texas-El Paso moved the ball to the 32-yard line and a 49-yard field goal from Martinez made it a 6-0 game with under six minutes to play in the first quarter.
Texas, though, scored 28 straight point to take control of the game.
McCoy quickly drove the team the length of the field, going 5-for-5 on the drive and capping it off with a 16-yard touchdown strike to Cosby.
After stopping the Miners, Texas got the ball back and a drive that spanned the first and second quarters ended when McCoy hooked up with Dan Buckner on a 12-yard score on the first play of the second quarter.
The Miners lined up for a 65-yard field goal and Martinez booted it online, but it fell several yards short and the Longhorns returned it to the UTEP 35 for excellent field position. Five plays later, Johnson punched the ball in from a yard out for a 21-6 lead with 9:20 left in the first half.
The Longhorns made it a 28-6 game on a 22-yard touchdown catch by Blaine Irby from McCoy to cap a six-play, 86-yard drive that was highlighted by a 39-yard reception from Cosby.
The Miners stopped the bleeding on their next possession to make it a 28-13 game. Vittatoe went 5-for-6 on the drive and a 12-yard touchdown pass to Tufick Shadrawy got the hosts within two scores heading into the locker room.
The third quarter passed without any points being put on the board, but Texas ended the frame with the ball and on 2nd-and-14 at the UTEP 15-yard line, McCoy found Jordan Shipley for a score and a 35-13 lead just 1:27 into the final stanza.
The Longhorns' defense got in on the scoring on the Miners' next possession. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Vittatoe hit Jackson for a pass, but he was hit hard and coughed up the ball. Roddrick Muckelroy scooped up the ball and took it into the end zone from 26 yards out for a 42-13 advantage.
This was just the third time these two teams have met with the Longhorns winning all three games. The previous meetings took place in 1930 and 1933...Jeff Moturi had five catches for 51 yards for the Miners...UTEP has lost eight straight overall.
