I'm Sick of Cupcakes

I don't even know if I want to go to KU's game against Toledo today. I'd like to consider myself a die-hard fan of my university, but this is getting ridiculous.

I'm not going to call the Rockets an automatic win; they beat us last year. But it's time to face some opponents who can give us a legitimate run for our money.

Every year KU likes to "nerf" the football team's non-conference schedule. This year ESPN's Mark Schlabach called the Jayhawks' schedule the easiest in the country.

"The Jayhawks' non-conference schedule includes more cream puffs than your favorite bakery: Central Michigan, Division I-AA Southeastern Louisiana, Toledo and Florida International," Schlabach wrote.

I have to agree. Our first 4 games are against non-BCS conference teams. Some say it helps boost momentum for the conference schedule. OK I'll agree with that, but FCS and non-BCS teams don't help train for the Big 12. When it's time to face K-State in October, the team's not going to be ready for the jump to actual competition.

OK so KU's scored 112 and held opponents to seven points through two games. That's Central Michigan and Southeastern Louisiana. The MAC champs and an FCS team. Today and next Saturday: Toledo and Florida International. Then we go to Manhattan for the Sunflower Showdown.

While the early games are great for padding KU's stats and wins, they may be screwed when they get to conference play. Non-conference time should prepare you for conference time. We should be facing teams close to Big 12 caliber.

No matter who you play you risk injury. Might as well be against teams that are worth getting injured playing.

The schedule gets us closer to bowl eligibility for the third straight year. That's about all the good it does for us. But KU still has to win 2 games against conference foes to get there.

Oh problem solved. Let's find a way to dodge Texas AND Oklahoma in the same season. The Jayhawks' toughest game on schedule is Texas A&M. Instead we have five games against Big 12 North foes. Keep in mind the North is more like Big 12 light. Then Baylor and Oklahoma State round out KU's hopes to dodge a challenge.

KU has two goal this year: eight wins and bowl eligibility. They may be realistic. The team's better than last year. I hope that's not the reason for nerfing the schedule.

What are wins worth unless you face formidable opponents? By brother's 10 years older than me and could always beat me up at home. That didn't prove him good. It proved he's scared to take on someone his own size. It's almost not a legit victory.

KU's in the same boat. So what if we win 8 and make it to a bowl? We pretty much cheated to get there.

And that's why KU Football can't be taken seriously.

Play some competition and maybe I'll be able to stay the whole game without getting sick of watching a team underachieve in victory.
