TEAMS: Virginia Tech Hokies
Where The Hokies Have Been: Another year, another 10-win season in Blacksburg. For the fourth straight year, Virginia Tech hit double digit wins, making them one of only three teams to hit the mark during that period, joining Texas and USC. But unlike those schools, nobody seems to put the Hokies in their same class. The reason? Well, for one they play in the ACC ... and secondly, who have they beaten over that period? Louisville in 2005 and Cincinnati last season? As good as the Hokies have been and as good as the players they've turned out are, Virginia Tech gets no respect. It doesn't help that the last four years the Hokies have ranked 103rd, 100th, 99th and 57th in total offense. Bud Foster's defense may deliver ACC titles and BCS berths but defense aint' sexy.
Where The Hokies Are Going: The defense will again be among the nation's best with Jason Worilds and Kam Chancellor but it's the offense that could be the difference in this being a very good ACC team and one of the best teams in the country.
The past two years, Tyrod Taylor had to split time with Sean Glennon at quarterback, including last year when he was going to be redshirted, a decision that lasted until halftime of the second game of the season vs. Furman. Taylor threw for 1,036 yards and two touchdowns to seven interceptions, but completed just 57.2 percent of his passes. His biggest asset, is his legs, which produced 738 yards and seven scores. He's going to have to shoulder more of a role with running back Darren Evans (1,265 yards and 11 TDs) out for the season with an ankle injury.
The Hokies' national title hopes could be over as soon as Week 1 as they face Alabama in Atlanta. If Taylor can't put this team on his back and win vs. one of the best the SEC has to offer, it's unlikely the ACC improves its national standing this season. Even if the Hokies do drop that game, they're likely headed for another 10-win season in the shadows.
The Señior Says: 10-2, ACC Coastal Division champs

Alabama vs. Virginia Tech (+6.5) @ Atlanta, GAAlabama jumped back into the national picture ahead of schedule last year, rising all the way to top spot in the national rankings before Florida asserted itself and Utah exposed the undermotivated Tide in the Sugar Bowl. ACC Game of the WeekVirginia Tech (neutral) Alabama
Is this the ACC game of the week? This is one of the top games of the year in the nation. Without Darren Evans the Hokies will have to rely on QB Tyrod Taylor. They have a deep backfield still with Ryan Williams, Josh Oglesby and David Wilson, but they are young.
Alabama has one of the most physical fronts in the nation. Terrance...
Alabama-Virgina Tech: The Second Quarter Will Tell the Tale
Everybody picks winners and losers, it's just in our nature as sports fans. What's harder is picking the reasons they'll win or lose.
Let me boldly proclaim that the team leading at halftime will win the game and I will explain why.
By nature, these are both conservative coaches who believe you win with defense and great special teams. Neither has a history of being...
