Stanford trying to actually get home field advantage against Cal

Having your fans never show up to your football games can pose a difficult issue: you never really have home field advantage. This seems to be a perpetual problem for the Stanford Cardinal, who even at their annual "Big Game" with California don't have home field advantage because there are always more Cal fans that show up in Palo Alto than residents of the Farm themselves. So in an attempt to change their fate a bit, the Cardinal athletic department is requiring those who are not boosters to buy Stanford season tickets in order to get a ticket to the Big Game. Citing the reduced size of their stadium (from 85,000 to 50,000 seats), Stanford is asking Bears fans for about $300 in order to get a single game ticket for the season finale matchup. Is it just me, or is Stanford really starting to sound desperate to revive their football program?

That is good business. The Chargers do something similar for Raiders fan. To get tickets to the San Diego - Oakland game in SD, fans muct buy some sort of package with other games paid for.

Sounds a little deperate. How about recruiting some finer talent, hiring better coaches, and winning on the field? That might equal larger crowds and less empty seats........

$300 for a single game ticket? fuck that, Stanfurd sucks anyway

I absolutely agree. But just to be clear, they are not literally asking for $300 for a single game ticket, but they are requiring that you buy season tickets to Stanford's games in order to get a ticket for the Big Game (and season tickets run around $300). As a result, Bears fans who want to go to the Big Game (and obviously not the rest of Stanford's games) will have to pay a hefty sum in order to get in.

Stanford is fighting the good fight -- only admitting athletes with solid academic credentials and expecting fans to back teams whether or not they win against competitors who admit

hired guns. Fans however, may not live up to expectations. Even if they make it easier for Cardinal fans to attend games the stadium may go empty unless Harbaugh can create some excitement on the field. Time to rethink the schedule? Princeton, Harvard, Duke vs Oregon St, Wash St and USC?

I don't think games against schools like Princeton, Harvard, and Duke would draw bigger crowds. Stanford might win, considering two of those schools are Division I-AA (but then again, maybe not, they did lose to I-AA UC Davis just two seasons ago) and the other (Duke) was one of only two teams to go winless in all of Division I-A football last season. Stanford needs to at least start beating any of the teams in their own conference, let alone the elite Pac-10 teams like USC and Cal.
