THE Ohio State Buckeyes headed to New Orleans for BCS Title game

For the second consecutive year, THE Ohio State Buckeyes will play for the BCS National Championship Title game. In truly what must be the most incredibly college football season, both #1 and #2 lost tonight, to more than likely, put #3 Ohio State back into the #1 slot again. Of course, three weeks ago, when Ohio State lost to then unranked Illinois and dropped to #7, it looked as though the National Title aspirations were over. Little did we know that all six teams ahead of the Buckeyes would keystone cop their way out of their shot at the title. Well, maybe all six.

The only question remaining is, who will be #2? Currently, the #3 Buckeyes are followed by #4 Georgia, #5 Kansas, #6 Virginia Tech, #7 LSU, #8 USC and #9 Oklahoma. Here's where it gets intriguing:

GO BUCKEYES!!! It's time to shut up the critics out there!!

OSU sucks, they will chock like last year. BIG 10 is the most overrated conference in college football. the WAC is better then them! If they play LSU or even GEORGIA, its over for OSU. they cant hang with the SEC.

Yes we will chock....chock up a victory for THE Ohio State University.

If we're talking overrated conferences, my thought is that the SEC should be at the top of the list.

See
Even we
Choke

Well, you can't really give them crap for getting there. The two teams in front of them just HANDED it over last night. Oof. There was complete devastation on the fields last night.

I have nothing against Ohio State, but I do not think they are one of the top 2 teams in the nation and therefore should not be playing in the National CHampionship. That is just my opinion. Based on the season, I feel that the two teams that should be playing for the title are Georgia and LSU. Obviously two SEC schools is damn near impossible but that is based on who I feel deserves to go. It will probably be Ohio State and LSU.

So much for 'THE' Ohio State buckeyes. They don't belong in the title game, they belong with USC in the Rose Bowl. They won't be able to hang with LSU, just like they couldn't hang with Florida last year. They haven't played since beating Michigan (which really wasn't much anyway) and will probably get beat worse then 41-14. LSU and Oklahoma just won their conferences through a conference championship, something just "given" to the buckeyes since they are in a weak Big Ten conference. I guess I'll have to bear with watching another title blowout instead of being able to watch a real game, like LSU vs. Oklahoma. Now is the time better then ever: LET'S GET A PLAYOFF SYSTEM!

I really don't agree with anything that you wrote...

So much for West Virginia. So much for Mizzou. Don't be such a hater. This season was wacky. Last year's BCS NC game was a fluke, and if you check OSU's bowl history, atypical.

I think we CAN agree on the fact that a playoff system would be a good change. I'm all for it.

You cannot blame a 27 point blowout on a fluke. I am sorry, it doesn't work like that. You have to accept the fact that comparing OSU's mediocre season to everyone elses, Georgia should be in the Title Game. And no I am not a fan of Georgia. Hell, I hate Georgia.

And what does Bowl History have to do with anything. You win or you lose. I am not getting defensive, albeit it might sound like it.

I'm just saying, we proved everyone wrong and beat Miami a few years ago to win the NC. We stuck it to ND, and we let up on them (We won, but we could have won by a lot more). There's a number of schools that we could have run up the score on in a bowl game, but it's not how we do things. It's just not very classy.

I can blame it on a fluke. It's not happened in any recent history that I can find. No one expected it. It was embarassing. OSU's season is mediocre compared to who's? Gerogia's? I really don't need to hear it from you. Hate on OSU all you want. There's nothing I can do to stop you. People just don't like us, because we have a strong program, year after year. You can't debate that. What happened last year was atypical, and therefore, a fluke. I don't care who we play in the title game. I was happy to hear that it was LSU. If they whoop up on us like Florida did last year, then I really hope that someone begins the process to implement a playoff system.

Maybe I'm a little sensitive because I buried my grandfather on January 8th of last year, but trust me, I remember that game very, very well. I have watched Ohio State football since I was three years old (went to my first game at four). I have NEVER seen an Ohio State team play a game like that. Maybe you're looking at fluke on a smaller picture (like, someone's shoelace was untied, and he tripped and missed a tackle, kind of fluke), while I'm looking at it on a much grander scale.

And sans the fluke, a stroll down memory lane...
W - 2005/06 Fiesta Ohio State 34, Notre Dame 20 (final #4 ranking) (Tressel)
W - 2004/05 Alamo Ohio State 33, Oklahoma State 7 (Tressel)
W - 2003/04 Fiesta Ohio State 35, Kansas State 28 (final #4 ranking) (Tressel)
W - 2002/03 Fiesta Ohio State 31, Miami (FL) 24 (2OT) (National Champions) (Tressel)
L - 2001/02 Outback South Carolina 31, Ohio State 28 (Tressel)
L - 2000/01 Outback South Carolina 24, Ohio State 7 (Cooper)
W - 1998/99 Sugar Ohio State 24, Texas A&M 14 (final #2 ranking) (Cooper)
L - 1997/98 Sugar Florida State 31, Ohio State 14 (Cooper)
W - 1996/97 Rose Ohio State 20, Arizona State 17 (final #2 ranking) (Cooper)

Not too shabby, I would say.

There are no flukes in bowl games. The team that plays the best wins. However, you must look at body of work throughout the season. The team that beat Akron, Miami(OH), and Ohio in the regular season does not deserve to be in the title game. Soft non-conference schedule combined with one of the most mediocre season equals no Title game. And you are saying LSU needs to kick your ass to implement a playoff system?

You know.... I said I was gonna keep it pretty low-profile this year just like I did before out NC game against Miami... but things like this I can't tolerate.

Please be aware that you're comparing apples to apples to here. If you lost me here's my point- you want to say OSU sucks becuase we played Akron, Miami, and Ohio all in the same season. I wont' even bother to go into the fact that OSU ALWAYS plays a few teams from their home state because Ohio knows how to make football players. Instead I'll just point this out-

Final rankings of those 3 teams:
Akron: 4-8
Ohio: 6-6
Miami: 6-7

Oh ya... and those guys down at LSU, lets remember their phenomenal out of conference schedule this year. Middle Tennessee, Tulane, and Louisiana Tech:
Mid. Tenn: 5-7
Tulane: 4-8
La. Tech: 5-7

Top to bottom the SEC was probably a little better than the Big Ten this year I'll give LSU that much. But you're also forgetting that here in the Big Ten we play a little thing we like to call defense. There is absolutely zero focus on defense for most SEC teams. LSU is one of those teams with a decent defense... however, they have yet to play AGAINST a real defense.

To wrap it up.... this is going to be a great game. I think this teams a both equally matched and both deserved a shot at the title. I've been living in Louisiana for 3 months now and I've seen plenty of SEC football. I think the Tigers are in for a rude awakening when they see a real defense.

BUT OF COURSE... I digress and my point is mainly this- If you're going to argue that OSU's non-conf schedule is soft.... PLEASE look at who LSU played out of conf. It's comparing apples to apples.

Its funny how you say the SEC should be at the top of the overrated list yet the bowls you lost are against SEC schools.. Hmmmm.. Thats odd. You cant beat SEC schools and it wont start this year either. Sorry Big 10 = overrated

Whats funny about your comment is that you failed to say that we beat the Crap out of Vtech. and we don't need to have a strong non-conf schedule when we are playing at least 6 top 25 teams every year. If Ohio St. or USC would play in the SEC they wouldn't be in the top 25 every year, instead they would be crying like the little girls they are. Dorsey of Heisman.

Baby boy, I've got your number. When January rolls around, we'll see who's crying like little girls. Until then, let's keep it moderately respectful.

ok dumbass above me, USC plays anyone. they have beaten an sec school the last five times they have played one. I think the sec should mix in a road game. By the way, everyone plays teams from their conferance tough. I enjoy watching sec schools start at the top of the ap poll every year and slowly drop out and then cry because their conferance is so hard. if that is true why was the sec record against bowl -eligable teams 2-5 this year? must be a fluke right? no, probably not. And before you try to hit me w/ SC lost to stanford smack, yeah, they did. but who is arguably the hottest team in the nation right now? I was hoping for georgia in the rose bowl because vegas had us as a 10 point favorite. I think it would have been worse if we got lsu. their defense is over-rated and the offense is nothing spectacular. so tell everyone- why does the sec have a losing record against teams that are not community colleges or not "wetern carolina" oh, also, congrats to tennesse on comming out west and getting their back-side handed to them. we look forward to another sec team comming out here, maybe next decade?

I never thought I would feel so united with a USC fan. : )

To be honest, I hope the critics keep writing. There's nothing like being part of a win when you are the underdog and everyone says you're going to lose.

Everyone continues to point out how overrated OSU was last year. And, the Big 10 seems to be continually sited as overrated...but is that argument getting a little old? OSU has been contending for the national title three times since 2003.

So, what is a proxy to understand if this is actually the case? How about NFL draft picks by conference? Or, active NFL players?

I don't really know the best proxy, but I found this site: http://www.geocommons.com/data_set/show/3937 and I'll post it to the Yard as a separate article after this.

If you use this tool and look at current players in the NFL broken down by school you'll see following top 10:

1) Florida (SEC) 48
1) Georgia (SEC) 48
1) Miami(ACC) 48
4) Ohio State(Big 10) 45
4) Florida State (ACC) 45
6) Michigan (Big 10) 43
7) Tennessee(SEC) 42
8) LSU(SEC) 38
9) USC(Pac 10) 34
10) Auburn (SEC)32
10) Nebraska(Big 12) 32
10) Texas (Big 12)32

It appears that the OSU is fairing pretty well, as far as NFL talent selection is concerned. I wonder why the NFL keeps tapping into the one of the most overrated teams and conferences for its draft choices...

It would also be worth mentioning as far as all-time first round draft picks, OSU is second. They have one fewer than USC, who is number one.

It appears many people think Ohio State football is second rate to the rest of the country. Well, come tommorrow night I believe you will see Les Miles trying to get rich rodrigiz fired at UM before he gets one game in. Miles and LSU are due to get the trouncing they deserve. LSU was lucky to win five of the games they won. Yeah they lost two in overtime, but should have lost in regulation. Get focused, Buckeyes. Beat LSU and stop this SEC bs.
