Mike Davis and the UAB Blazers are the Conference USA outright regular season champions. That means a lot, and says a lot about the ability of Davis as a coach and a recruiter. They still may not be in the tournament however.
In what could be Davis' best coaching effort to date in Birmingham, the Blazers defeated East Carolina 66-48 Saturday. They have won 7 of their last 8 games.
UAB sits at (22-7, 12-4 C-USA) with the conference tournament in El Paso, Texas beginning next week. With an RPI of 28, (as of Sunday March 6). Most brackelogists have the Blazers in the NCAA Tournament but obviously a win or two in the tourney always helps.
Davis told the Birmingham News, "We won the conference championship. The committee is a lot smarter than me.
