When watching Houston's Patrick Edwards collide with a metal service cart last season against Marshall, the first thing that came to mind was Tyrone Prothro, the Alabama receiver whose gruesome leg injury ruined his career. But a comeback? That was the last thing anyone was thinking as Edwards was carted off the field.
"After I hit the cart I didn't feel anything, I was just numb," Edwards told ESPN.com. "And really, I didn't want to look down because I knew something was wrong because I couldn't feel my leg... I was hoping I could get back up and walk, but they told me not to move because my leg was dangling. So I didn't know if I was going to be able to walk again or play football again. I was just scared and nervous, thinking of the worst."
Call Edwards The Bionic Man, because the sophomore-to-be says he's coming back this season. Oh, and he's pursuing legal action against Marshall for the injury. You have to wonder if Edwards, who was leading the Cougars with 634 receiving yards before his injury, will be timid if he's running another deep post, thinking in the back of his mind it could happen again. We've seen it with guys who get clocked going over the middle and center fielders who crash into the wall. Regardless if Edwards is ever the same player again, the mere fact that he would be on the field again should make him the clear-cut favorite for the FedEx Orange Bowl Courage Award.
