When you’re less than a week a week away from being drafted by an NFL team, getting arrested for assault is something you don’t want to do. If that person you allegedly assaulted is an on-duty police officer, then that’s something you definitely don’t want to do. But that’s reportedly what happened with former Nebraska cornerback Alfonzo Dennard early Saturday morning outside a Lincoln, Neb., watering hole. From the Omaha World-Herald:

Lincoln police said Dennard, 22, was fighting with another man outside a bar near 14th and O Streets about 2:15 a.m.

When officers attempted to intervene, police said, Dennard allegedly pushed and then punched one officer in the face.

It took four police officers to take Dennard into custody, according to police.

Dennard was arrested on separate third-degree assault charges — one in connection with the cop, the other for the prior altercation at the bar. He’ll remain in custody through the weekend. His bail is expected to be set on Monday.

Dennard, an All-Big Ten player last season, was projected as a second-to-fourth-round selection in the draft before his arrest. This incident probably hurts his stock in the eyes of teams not named the Lions. He already had a previous incident of fighting on his resume, too, when he was ejected from the 2012 Capital One Bowl for attempting a haymaker on South Carolina receiver Alshon Jeffery.

“I take that blame,” he said after that game. “I’m not that type of person. I think (the NFL teams) know that.”

Ha. Funny.
