Arizona was hoping for some pre-signing-day good news Sunday in the form of a commitment from highly touted quarterback recruit Devin Fuller of Old Tappan, N.J., Scout.com's No. 3 dual-threat quarterback nationally and No. 88 player overall. It wasn't to be.
Fuller, who took his final official recruiting visit to Tucson last week, committed to UCLA on Sunday, passing up the chance to play in Rich Rodriguez's spread offense in favor of joining new coach Jim Mora -- and new offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone, formerly of ASU -- with the Bruins.
Fuller's other finalists were Nebraska and Rutgers, which had been projected by most experts as the favorite prior to former coach Greg Schiano's decision last week to leave for the head coaching job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
As a senior, Fuller was 127 of 195 passing for 2,247 yards and 20 touchdowns while rushing for 1,326 yards and 17 scores.
Senior Matt Scott is the only scholarship quarterback currently on Arizona's roster. Tom Savage, who transferred to UA from Rutgers last season, recently left the program to return home due to family reasons, and redshirt freshman Daxx Garman transferred to Oklahoma State.
The Wildcats do have two verbal commitments from quarterbacks in the 2012 class, although neither has a recruiting resume close to that of Fuller's. Josh Kern, a 6-foot-5 passer from San Antonio given three stars by Scout, stayed committed to UA following the late-season coaching change, and Rodriguez recently gained a commitment from two-star quarterback Javelle Allen out of Texas.
