As we enter hour 39 of the Calipari watch, he has yet to
sign on the dotted line in the Commonwealth (despite what Wikipedia may say)
and the longer it goes on, the more questions that arise.
I still think he's going to make the jump to UK,
but then again, I don't really know anything.
While all the focus in the world has been on Cal,
there have been plenty of other moves in the coaching world.
Done Deals
ALABAMA -
Everyone knew that Anthony Grant was going somewhere in the SEC, the only question
was where. The Crimson Tide walk away winners in the Grant sweepstakes, even
after the Kentucky job came -
which in turn may have opened the Florida
job Grant almost had in 2007.
VIRGINIA -
After buying out Dave Lieato, the Cavs were able to lure 2007 National Coach of
the Year Tony Bennett from Pullman to Charlottesville.
This comes one year after Bennett turned down both Indiana and LSU. I guess the
ACC really does have that kind of pull.
VCU - Keeping with the VCU-Florida connection, the Rams didn't
waste any time looking for Grant's replace, nabbing Florida
assistant Shaka Smith. Smith has already been placed on the "STF All-Name Watch
List" for 2010.
In The Works
GEORGIA
- The Bulldogs are tempting Mike Anderson a possible salary of 2 million, about double what he is being paid
at Mizzou. If they can't get Anderson, Georgia
is expected to make a run at Miami's
Frank Haith. This will easily make Georgia
the most hated team in the STF world.
WASHINGTON STATE
- New to the job search after Bennett's departure, Andy Katz is reporting that
the Cougars will go after Portland State's
Ken Bone, Saint Mary's Randy Bennett and San Diego's
Billy Grier.
Holding Pattern
MEMPHIS -
Assuming Calapari does leave, that creates a pretty attractive job opening in Memphis.
According to Dan Wolken of the Memphis Commercial-Appeal (and friend of STF)
says that hot names are Mike Anderson, Tim Floyd, Tony Barbee of UTEP.
ARIZONA -
Anyone else forget that this mega-job is still open? Reggie Theus, Mark Few and
Tubby Smith are a few of the names being thrown around, but I'm sure the Zona
job will jump to the forefront once Coach Cal
has made up his mind.
