AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn has hired former Southern Miss coach Ellis Johnson as defensive coordinator.
New Tigers coach Gus Malzahn announced the hiring of the veteran Southeastern Conference assistant Thursday two days after getting the job.
Johnson was fired after Southern Miss went 0-12 in his lone season, but has an impressive track record running SEC defenses.
"Ellis is one of the top defensive minds in all of college football. He is very experienced and has tremendous success coaching in the Southeastern Conference," Malzahn said. "He is a man of integrity who will be a great ambassador for Auburn. We're very pleased to have him join our staff and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program."
Johnson has been defensive coordinator at South Carolina, Clemson, Alabama and Mississippi State and spent 16 seasons at the various SEC stops.
His final Gamecocks defense ranked third nationally in yards allowed and second-best against the pass in 2011, his fourth season.
The Tigers had a frequently shuffling lineup on defense last season. They finished 80th nationally in total defense, giving up 420.5 yards a game.
Malzahn told Gene Chizik's assistants on Wednesday that they wouldn't be retained.
Johnson was also head coach of The Citadel from 2001-03. He called his new job "truly a home run for me."
"I'm very fortunate for the opportunity to coach at Auburn and return to the Southeastern Conference, where there is so much tradition and history," Johnson said. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for Gus Malzahn, both as a man and a coach, and I really look forward to working for him."
Johnson has had two stops at Alabama. He was the defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach from 1997-2000, and his 1999 defense was second nationally against the run and ninth overall.
He coached outside linebackers for the Crimson Tide's 1992 national championship team.

High school linebacker Reuben Foster has reopened his recruitment despite committing to Auburn and getting a tattoo of the school logo.
LEGGO MY LOGO
This screenshot of the American Eagle Outfitter’s store shows an elephant (The Alabama Crimson Tide’s mascot) with what looks to be an Auburn Tiger logo on it. They may have stirred up an already intense rivalry that has been documented on ESPN’s “Roll Tide / War Eagle.” I’m sure this will anger Crimson Tide fans as much as it will Tiger fans. Expect to see this removed...
There was once a time when five-star linebacker recruit Reuben Foster was so certain he would be playing college ball at Auburn that he got a tattoo to prove it. Then, the Tigers struggled through a 3-9 season and fired Gene Chizik. According to Al.com, Foster has decommitted from Auburn and is now considering Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Washington and Miami. So, about that tattoo…...
During the course of Auburn’s disastrous 2012 season, the cliché tagline that got thrown around about former Auburn head coach Gene Chizik was as follows: The man never did a damn thing as a head coach without Cam Newton as his quarterback. Between stops at Iowa State and Auburn, Chizik has a record of just 24-33 with anyone other than Newton playing quarterback for him. He was...

Ever get a tattoo of a girlfriend that you later broke up with? Top high school recruit Rueben Foster can relate.
It seems that Foster, who is one of the top inside linebackers in the country coming out of high school, had originally committed verbally to play football at the University of Alabama, which he backed out on this summer.
Next up was Auburn, who Foster again verbally...

Little did he know that the head coach...
New Auburn coach Gus Malzahn was flanked by his fresh-faced protege, offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, and silver-haired defensive boss Ellis Johnson on Friday.
He introduced the 29-year-old Lashlee and 60-year-old Johnson at a news conference three days after his hiring. Lashlee will make $350,000 a year while Johnson received an $800,000 salary, though Auburn hasn't released...
Bret Bielema Former Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema shocked many by accepting a new coaching job at Arkansas. Bielema accrued a 68-24 record while at Wisconsin, but was 0-2 in the Rose Bowl. Experts were also surprised, because of comments he made in February about the SEC.Bielema said, "We at the Big Ten don't want to be like the SEC — in any way, shape or form."...
Yesterday, new Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn informed the assistants from Gene Chizik's staff that they would not be retained. However, he did let them know that if his new offensive and defensive coordinators were interested in them, they could be hired back.
