Common sense suggests a returning Heisman Trophy finalist at running back ought to touch the ball with his team trailing in the fourth quarter, badly needing one yard on fourth down. Then again, plenty of what Wisconsin's football team presented on the field Saturday afternoon defied logic. So instead, Badgers running back Montee Ball watched from the backfield as quarterback Danny O'Brien attempted a sneak up the middle from Oregon State's 37-yard-line with 11 minutes remaining in the game. O'Brien never made it past the line of scrimmage.Hindsight, of course, is 2020, but if any play hinted at the level of Wisconsin's offensive ineptitude, this was it. The Badgers turned the ball over on downs on their way to completing an absolutely stunning stinker. Oregon State, which won three games last season, held on for a 10-7 victory against No. 13 Wisconsin at Reser Stadium. The facts, much like the game itself, weren't pretty for Wisconsin. The Badgers' streak of 33 consecutive regular-season nonconference victories is over. So is Ball's streak of 21 straight games with a touchdown and likely his Heisman Trophy candidacy. Wisconsin was shut out through three quarters for the first time in seven years. And only a touchdown drive in the final two minutes prevented the Badgers from being shut out in a game for the first time in 15 years. Now, serious questions must be addressed about a team that was supposed to challenge for a third straight Big Ten championship. There will inevitably be concerns raised about new offensive coordinator Matt Canada's ability to draw up plays. The quarterback sneak aside, Wisconsin has struggled to score consistently in 2012. Although two games is a small sample size, averaging 16.5 points per game certainly won't cut it.Last year, with offensive coordinator Paul Chryst now head coach at Pittsburgh the Badgers averaged 44.1 points and never scored fewer than 28 points in a game. Wisconsin now has failed to reach that mark in both contests this season. Why?Is it Canada's style? Is it the offensive line's inability to open holes? Is it the lack of quality wide receivers? Is O'Brien merely an average quarterback? It has been said not to rush to judgment without examining the evidence. But the evidence presented thus far leaves plenty of room for criticism.Wisconsin barely hung on for a 26-21 victory last week against Northern Iowa of the lower-tier Football Championship Subdivision. On Saturday, Oregon State outgained Wisconsin 354 yards to 207, the Badgers' lowest total in five seasons. The Beavers held on to the ball 11 minutes longer than the Badgers. And the score could have been much worse if not for Wisconsin's staunch defense over Oregon State's 77 plays (Wisconsin ran 61 plays). Ball, who rushed 32 times for 120 yards a week ago, carried the ball just 15 times for 61 yards against the Beavers. When No. 1 wide receiver Jared Abbrederis injured himself in the second quarter and didn't return, Ball should have taken more carries, not fewer. Losses on the road in college football happen all the time, but the way in which Wisconsin played offensively was beyond embarrassing. It was borderline humiliating. And the result should lead to Badgers fans reassessing their level of optimism for this year's team. In other words, they should lower their standards. This is not the same unit that reached back-to-back Rose Bowls.Gone to the NFL off last year's team are two offensive linemen (Peter Konz and Kevin Zeitler), a fullback (Bradie Ewing), a wide receiver (Nick Toon) and a quarterback (Russell Wilson) who was named the opening day starter for the Seattle Seahawks.O'Brien was compared heavily in the offseason to Wilson because the two share a similar story. Both transferred to Wisconsin from Atlantic Coast Conference programs under the graduate student transfer exception rule. But O'Brien is not an NFL-ready quarterback as Wilson was last season, and the team doesn't execute small details as well as it did in 2011.With the game still hanging in the balance during the second half on Saturday, O'Brien threw an interception and fumbled in the red zone on successive drives. Wilson threw just four interceptions all of last season, and the Badgers scored in the red zone 71 of 75 times (95 percent).Last season, Wisconsin led the nation in third-down conversion rate at 55 percent. On Saturday, the Badgers whiffed on their first 12 third-down attempts and finished 2 for 14 (14.2 percent).Yes, it's just one game. If nothing else, the putrid stench of misery should cling to the Badgers all week. But Saturday's result also might serve as a warning. If things don't improve during Big Ten play, that stench could remain all season.Follow Jesse Temple on Twitter.

Wisconsin Football: Bret Bielema Refuses to Send Tape to Oregon State

Oregon State was supposed to open their season on September 1st against Nicholls State. However, Hurricane Isaac made it impossible for the Thibodeaux, Louisiana school to fly up to Corvallis, Oregon to play the Beavers. The game has been postponed and has yet to be rescheduled, though I’m sure both sides are very interested in playing each other. Oregon State could use the extra...

Second weekend of college football full of Top 25 upsets

This past weekend was full of upsets in the top 25. This is what makes college football so great. Louisiana Monroe 34 over #8 Arkansas 31 Arkansas came into the ULM game thinking it would be just another non-conference win for the Razorbacks, but after quarterback Tyler Wilson was injured the Hogs offense sputtered to a screeching halt. The Razorbacks second half finished with 1...

College Fantasy Football: Week 2 Rapid Fire Preview

Week 2 is here, and I hate to say it but it's completely void of compelling matchups. We had the typical Big East slop last night in the form of Pitt and Cincy.  Tonight you get an in-state rivalry. No, not Alabama-Auburn, Oklahoma State-Oklahoma or Michigan State-Michigan.  You get Utah-Utah State.  Meh.This weekend doesn't pit ANY ranked teams going head-to-head. Not...

College Fantasy Football: What We Learned, Week 2

Every now and then, a week pops up that makes very little sense in the world of college fantasy football.  We usually are privy to two or three of these bastardly weeks during the course of a season. It happened this weekend.  And it burned many college fantasy owners. We feel your plight.  We were burned as well.  Luckily, we survived the carnage in most of our leagues, but it...

2012 NCAA Football: Recapping The Biggest Upsets From Week 2

Upsets are a big part of college football. You know what I’m talking about here; the games in which a lesser team knocks off a talented team that’s usually nationally ranked. It isn’t always pretty but, hey, it doesn’t have to be. That’s why they’re called upsets. In this article, I’ll be giving Week Two’s three biggest upsets.   Louisiana Monroe over #8 Arkansas...

Oregon State Exposes Badgers in 10-7 Victory

Without a doubt, this was the single worst offensive performance I may have ever seen by the Wisconsin Badgers. While the defense was stiff enough to limit the Oregon State Beavers to 10 points, an utterly inept Badger attack caused Bucky to give Bret Bielema his first ever non-conference regular season loss. I won't bother diving deep into all the statistics. It...

College Football’s Week 2 Contenders, Pretenders

Pretender: Arkansas Razorbacks The original report of a broken collarbone to Tyler Wilson was inaccurate, but he still may miss time despite being listed as “day to day” at the moment. Alabama is coming up next, but their devastating loss to Louisiana-Monroe out of the Sun Belt was the headline story of the weekend. It should not matter if you had the majority of your backups...

Sunday Morning Hangover: Where Have You Gone, Wisconsin Football?

(Ed. note: each Sunday morning the rest of the year I will present this column as a way to breakdown the game without the blinders of fresh emotion or the view from the press box) There's no two ways about this, that loss still stings. It's hard to point a single good thing to take away from the game. The offense looked completely inept and a better offense puts...

Is Purdue Now The Favorite To Win The Big Ten Leaders Division?

Arguing that a team coming off a loss has jumped to the forefront as the favorite to play for a conference championship isn’t too common. Well, it isn’t common unless the team plays in the Big Ten Leaders Division. A strong defense, a favorable schedule, and a weaker-than-expected rest of the division (plus Ohio State’s ineligibility) has Purdue looking like the team to beat...

Wisconsin Badgers loss stings but not a season-ender

A shot at the National Championship Game is off the table, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the Wisconsin Badgers season is over. Yes, they were outplayed in every facet of the game in a 10-7 loss to the Oregon State Beavers. Bad play on the road is nothing new for the Badgers. Even Russell Wilson couldn’t save them from going 2-2 in true road games last season, including a...

Canada takes blame for Badgers' woes

MADISON, Wis. Matt Canada stood in front of the firing squad Sunday night, facing questions from the media for the first time since Wisconsin's putrid 10-7 loss at Oregon State one day earlier. Canada, Wisconsin's offensive coordinator, took sole responsibility for the offensive woes all game long. "Nobody's any more disappointed than me," Canada said. "...

Badgers' run defense is lone bright spot

Wisconsin played its worst game in years, and the Badgers paid the price in the form of a 10-7 loss at Oregon State on Saturday afternoon. UW dropped to 1-1 this season and fell out of the Associated Press Top 25 poll for the first time in three seasons. The offense in particular sputtered in ways Wisconsin fans have not seen for quite some time. Was it an anomaly or the beginning...

Saturday Afternoon Review: Week 2

While we're still enjoying many of the great games this evening, let's take a quick look back at some the games from this afternoon. Not too many surprises, but we're definitely beginning to learn more about the 2012 college football landscape. #9 South Carolina 48, East Carolina 10 No Connor Shaw? No problem. Shaw was unable to go today due to a bruised shoulder...
