Keith Wenning threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score Saturday, giving Ball State a 27-20 upset of Indiana.
Wenning was 23 of 29 and ran for 61 yards, including a key first down late to help the Cardinals win their second straight over Indiana. The teams last met in 2008.
Ball State rushed for 210 yards in coach Pete Lembo's debut. Ball State trailed 17-14 at halftime, but tied it on a 38-yard field goal just after the break and took the lead on a perfect 20-yard pass from Wenning to Connor Ryan in the corner of the end zone late in the third quarter.
It was Indiana's first season-opening loss in eight years and ruined the debut of Hoosiers coach Kevin Wilson.
Edward Wright-Baker was 20 of 32 for 272 yards and one touchdown for the Hoosiers.
