For the second time in twenty years, both the University of Stanford and the University of California are bowl eligible before the battle for the Axe, which currently resides at Stanford and Andrew Luck. Cal is looking to get the Axe back and the Bears have won two of the last four "big" games and seven out of nine under head coach Jeff Tedford.
Cal, 6-4 overall, is above 500, which puts them in middling bowl territory. Stanford is clinging to the hope that they may still make a BCS bowl game, which is contingent on how Oregon and several other top 5 teams perform this weekend and the following. If Cal can pull off an upset, not only would they improve to 7-4 and move up the bowl game totem pole, but they would also cost the Pac-12 about $6 million because Stanford wouldn't be the pick for an at-large BCS bowl berth.
