Chris Petersen may be the best coach in college football. And he doesn’t want to make a move to a bigger college program. Maybe that is what makes him such a great find for the people in Boise. There were 11 wins last season when it looked like this team would fall apart because it lost major chunks of its offense and the defense would not be able to tackle a rock. But these Broncos continue to surprise us all. Is it the blue carpet at the stadium? Is it the offense? No, it’s the coaching. These Broncos will impress us again. Yes, there are major positions and depth to fill, but something tells us Petersen and his troops will overachieve again. Here are some things to know about the Boise State Broncos before the 2013 season begins.1. Petersen keeps winningIt’s that unassuming winning attitude that makes him perfect for this team. He is 84-8 at Boise State, 51-4 in MWC. While other schools have reached out to him, he continues to call Idaho home.2. Its Southwick againJoe Southwick returns for his senior season with one year as a starter under his belt. Southwick improved down the stretch last year and should only get better this year now that he has some experience. Hopefully that means this team can compete in a New Year’s Day bowl game.3. Taking a step forwardSophomore Jay Ajayi will be the team’s starting running back. He had a good showing as a freshman, so there is no concern of the position being flat.4. The defense will need rebuildingThe Broncos lost three of their top four tacklers but do return six of the top 10 including five that were underclassmen last season. Depth will not be an issue.5. Major hits up frontThe defensive line takes a hit as Boise State lost four contributors from last year but the team does return their best player (Demarcus Lawrence). Boise runs a 4-2-5 and will need to replace both of their starting LBs, including leading tackler J.C. Percy.6. Strength in numbersThis team will have a very solid receiving corps this season. Matt Miller and Kirby Moore are returning and behind them there is a lot of talent like Geraldo Boldewijn, Aaron Burks and Shane Williams-Rhodes.7. The hogs up front are youngThe offensive line returns just 52 starts. They will need to gel quickly if the protection for Southwick is to be solid. This is the team’s weakest link.8. Depth will be a concernBecause half the starting lineup is not set, the question of depth becomes an issue.9. Help is on the wayThe team’s top recruits are OLB Gabe Perez, RB Aaron Baltazar, OLB Tanner Vallejo, WR Kendal Keys, OLB Durrant Miles. The play of Perez and Miles may be valuable to the team this season.10. Finally another calling?Petersen will get this team to a 10-win season and other programs will call on him. Maybe Texas A&M, maybe USC or even South Carolina. Will he accept. I think not.
