Ohio State's coaches have spent all of this week working on ''the option.''
No, not the option offense. But rather any option other than having quarterback Braxton Miller running the ball so much.
Miller has 44 carries through two games - only 10 players in all of FBS have more. And most if not all of them are running backs, so they don't also have to be versatile enough to run an offense and throw passes.
With the top two tailbacks (Carlos Hyde, Jordan Hall) either sidelined or severely limited this week by injuries, that leaves two other largely unproven backs (Rod Smith, Brio'nte Dunn) to shoulder much of the running game.
Coach Urban Meyer says the Buckeyes won't know if they've solved their problem until they play California on Saturday.
BEST OF MAXIM
No one can deny that Saturday’s Ohio State game vs UCF could have been named “The Braxton Miller Show!” With three rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown, Miller was finally starting to look like the type of quarterback Buckeye fans are used to seeing. Following the game, it came as little surprise that Miller had finally made the list of candidates for the Heisman trophy...
You don’t suppose he was already practicing the Heisman pose last year, do you?
Numbers aren’t everything, and relying solely on what they may or may not reveal is a dangerous approach to sports comparisons. Professional baseball is a sport built on them; college football is not. With that said, they can guide us in the direction of an educated opinion and can indeed tell...
4th in the nation in rushing. #BuckeyeQBProblems
The Buckeyes were determined Saturday to start off strong against University of Central Florida (UCF); the defense took the field first and looked solid, holding UCF to three and out, and Miller took the field ready to make a statement.

Outside linebacker Brennan Scarlett and the Cal defense must balance patience and aggression when facing mobile Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller.
OSU quarterback Braxton Miller is on pace to challenge Eddie George's single-season rushing record, but can the Buckeyes afford to continue putting their franchise player at such risk? We have some thoughts about that along with the regular weekly features including the Fearless Forecast.
With California heading to town, we take our weekly look at what will be key for the Buckeyes this week. Items on the agenda include finding help for Braxton Miller both by air and land, taking advantage of the kicking game, ramping up the pass rush and dealing with an early start time.
Linebacker Robert Mullins stresses the importance of tackling, as Cal's defense will be taxed by Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller.
In his brief time as head coach at Ohio State, Urban Meyer concedes it's not everything he thought it would be.
Despite a 2-0 record and No. 12 ranking, Meyer is not pleased with many aspects of his first Ohio State team. He has pointed out problems with the running backs, the wide-receivers, both lines, the secondary and linebackers. Now he's challenging fans to rise up...
Mommy WOW! I'm a big kid now!
Hey now! The title of today's post has to make the blood pressure of many of our fine contributors rise but all I ask is that you hear (or read) me out because I like to think that I make great CEREBRAL points.
I think that it's pretty obvious that Urban Meyer knows what he's doing. His history is proof of that. However, I...
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Forget about satisfying poll voters, administrators, alumni and fans. Even coach Urban Meyer says there are a lot of things about the Ohio State Buckeyes that haven't met his lofty expectations so far.
Now he's calling out his players -- and to a lesser degree, the team's scarlet-and-gray clad faithful -- to turn things around.
Despite a 2-0 record...
