BYU receiver Mitch Mathews suffered a season ending shoulder injury last week in the loss to Wisconsin. The injury occurred when the 6′-6″ 206 lb. sophomore was diving to catch a pass.
Cougar coach Bronco Mendenhall said in a post-game press conference that Mathews’ injury will require surgery. Mathews is BYU’s second leading receiver with 23 catches for 397 yds. and four touchdowns.
Three other Cougar players were also injured against the Badgers and will miss Saturday’s game. Linebacker Spencer Hadley is listed as week-to-week. The 6′-1″ 227 lb. senior suffered a mild MCL injury that will not require surgery.
BYU tight end Devin Mahina is doubtful for this week. The 6′-6″ 247 lb. junior strained an inner thigh muscle. Mahina has caught seven passes for 64 yds. this season.
Also out for at least the next game is offensive lineman Ryker Mathews. The 6″-6 309 lb. Cougar sophomore is recovering from a neck injury. Mathews hopes to play against Notre Dame in two weeks.
