Found October 01, 2013 on Sports Injury Alert:
Joni Pitkanen was put on the LTIR, Long Term Injured Reserve on Tuesday, adding to the shuffling the team has already done this pre-season. In addition to Pitkanen, his fellow blue liner Matt Corrente was put on waivers. The 30 year old defenseman is now going to miss the whole 2013-14 NHL campaign due to the lingering affects of a heel that was broken going back to late last season. This is a big blow to the ‘Canes defensive corp, but there is some good news. This move will net Carolina $4.5 million salary cap relief by placing Pitkanen on LTIR. All told they will have close to $5 million to play with to sure up the team. As for Corrente who is now 25, it was a surprise that they kept him on the roster this week while their highly touted prospect Ryan Murphy was sent to AHL Charlotte. The speculation Monday was that this was just a roster compliance transaction and Corrente will be placed on waivers, then reassigned to Charlotte, and his spot will be taken by Murphy who should be ...

Who will be the final 23?

Another round of roster cuts has passed and it's still uncertain what the Hurricanes opening day roster will look like. The team has spent the last couple of days attempting to trim down the roster to 23 and while we are getting a better picture of what the roster will look like, it's still tough to figure things out at the moment. Between the injuries, the Welsh/Dalpe trade...

Lindholm returns to Canes practice

Elias Lindholm returned to practice Tuesday but Alexander Semin again was absent as the Canes continue to gear up for Friday's opener against Detroit. Lindholm has been slowed by a hand injury and played only in the Canes' first preseason game. The Canes' first-round draft pick has missed practices but spent considerable time being led through conditioning workouts by...

Alexander Semin returns to Canes practice

Alexander Semin was back at Canes practice Wednesday returning just two days before the season opener with Detroit. Not that Canes coach Kirk Muller was too worried about it. Semin is a veteran forward has been skating with assistant coach Rod Brind'Amour and was an easy fit back on the line with center Eric Staal and Jiri Tlusty and on the first power play unit. "It&...

Unfortunately, the roster the Hurricanes submitted left everyone with more unanswered questions. According to the statement released by the Canes today, the Hurricanes "opening night" roster will feature 12 forwards...

Carolina Hurricanes GM Says It’s Time to Get Rid of Fighting from NHL

Fighting is one of the most controversial and exciting parts of the NHL game, but a growing number of people would like the league to remove it entirely. One opponent of fighting is Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford, who recently told TSN’s Darren Dreger that ”We’ve got to get rid of fighting, it has to go.” The league has put a huge emphasis on preventing...

Carolina Hurricanes need a balanced game

Anton Khudobin (Photo credit: Fox Sports) Let’s talk about the reality of the Carolina Hurricanes coming out of Quebec City against the Montreal Canadiens on the 20th. The reality is that Carolina is not a strong team to be reckoned with by any means. Initially, head coach Kirk Muller was attesting most of the shots on goal and scores to the fact that the ‘Canes have a large...

Matt Karash: 2013-14 Carolina Hurricanes Preview (Pt 1):What it takes to make playoffs

In the ongoing saga that is the creation of the opening night roster, we saw 2 entries today. In terms of injuries, we got a tiny bit more clarity today. Gleason has a concussion, is out indefinitely and will not play in the opener though he has not yet been placed on IR (unless I missed it). Skinner practiced. Semin and Lindholm did not, but both seem to still be in the mix...

NHL players approve hybrid icing rule

Hybrid icing will be in effect for the start of the NHL regular season after it was approved by the players. The NHLPA gave the go-ahead for the rule change that makes icing a race to an imaginary line across the faceoff dots instead of the puck, which was given a trial run during the preseason. The goal is to prevent serious injuries, such as the one that sidelined Carolina Hurricanes...

Hybrid icing approved for use

In case you missed it, the NHL and the NHLPA approved a rule change for this season that implements hybrid icing for use this season. Hybrid icing was used during the preseason, and for all intents and purposes, is a race to the face off dot. If the defenseman wins the race, the play is blown dead. If the forward wins the race, the play will continue. This rule change is to hopefully...

NHL to use hybrid icing

The 2013-14 season is going to have a different look.  With lots of talk over the past few seasons about hybrid icing, the NHL and NHLPA has come to an agreement to implement the no touch icing in the upcoming season. Since the league has cracked down on hits to the head over the years, there has been a fine line when it comes to safety on chasing down a puck for icing.  With the...
