FAMOUS IDAHO POTATO BOWL

Ohio Bobcats vs. Utah State Aggies

Dec. 17, 5:30 pm ET

Bronco Stadium (Boise, Idaho)

TV: ESPN

Line: Utah State -1.5

Nothing says famous like playing a bowl game on blue turf in the heart of potato country and pitting a small North American cat against a common land-grant or toy marble. You know, whichever fits your purpose.

Making This All Possible

The Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) is a government agency of the State of Idaho established in 1937. At the foundation of the IPC, it was named the Idaho Fruit and Vegetable Advertising Commission and personally I believe the former name would have been a much finer name for a bowl. For the love of all things nostalgic, why couldn’t it have been? Last year, this bowl was known as the “Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl” and while nothing says humanitarian quite like a potato, I hereby move to allow this bowl be known as the “Roady’s Idaho MPC Humanitarian Fruit and Vegetable Advertising Commission Bowl brought to you by Johan et Pirlouit”. (If you got that you win all the potatoes)

Get to know: Ohio

Ohio is making its third consecutive bowl appearance and is coached by former Nebraska head coach Frank Solich. They will be looking for their first bowl victory in school history. Ohio enters this bowl on a downer, having led Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship 20-0 before losing 23-20.

The Ohio offense is led by senior quarterback Tyler Tettleton – son of former Detroit Tigers great, Mickey Tettleton – who set 12 Bobcats single-season records this season. Tettleton currently ranks 20th nationally with 26 touchdown passes.

Get to know: Utah State

Utah State, coached by Utah Utes alum Gary Anderson, finished the 2011 regular season with five-straight victories. The Aggies bring with them the 6th-ranked rushing attack in the country led by junior Robert Turbin and his 1,416 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Utah State and its 7-5 record are a bit deceiving, considering they played Auburn and BYU; losing by a combined margin of 7 points.

You Should Know…

The Idaho Grower Shippers Association will donate three potatoes to The Idaho Foodbank’s Eastern Idaho branch for each fan who attends the bowl game.

If You’re Going

The Old Idaho Penitentiary is an atypical stead to tell readers to visit (Note: we do not encourage rioting after the game) but have no angst; the aforementioned penitentiary is closed to inmates, so you'll be safe. The pen – open year-round – is an abode for tourists to visit and walk through where old vigilante potato farmers were placed in solitary confinement, cell blocks and the gallows. Quite the destination for you history buffs.

If you are trekking to Boise: For breakfast meander down to Goldy’s Breakfast Bistro for their turkey pesto sausage, beets and salmon omelets and frittatas. For lunch, move over to Brick 29 for steak and shrimp cakes as you prepare for the Famous Potato Bowl.

If You’re Watching At home

Laughing Dog Brewery, located in Ponderay, Idaho, house several exemplary brews for your at-home-adult-sipping-pleasure.

I will recommend you picking up a bottle of Laughing Dog Devil Dog Imperial IPA. With a 10% ABV, let it warm a bit before you indulge in the foamy, frothy, sudsy white head which leaves such a beautiful lacing.

Prediction

When it comes down to it Ohio versus Utah State, a battle of contrasting styles; this should be a tight and very competitive game all the way to the end. Utah State with Robert Turbin running the ball will be too much for Ohio in a game of four quarters.

Utah State 24, Ohio 17
