The offseason lends itself to a lot of forward thinking, both in innovation and actually looking forward into the future. There are two little nuggets I wanted to share with you on this great Friday. The first is from SB Nation. Peter Berkes kicked off the College Football Entertainment Index. There is a lot that goes into it and the formula is worth checking out. To show how it worked, he showed the ranking from last season. Out of 124 teams, Cincinnati ranked 66th. That seems about right. There were a couple of big time blockbuster entertaining games like Virginia Tech and Louisville. There were also some not exciting games like the 10-3 Rutgers outing. The pace of plays had a lot to do with things. It's worth a read. And Peter is a great writer so check it out. The second thing is what drew the headline. CBS is looking towards the 2014 NFL draft. They ranked the top 5 Cincinnati draft prospects. The man with his picture at the top of this post and his name in the headline, Greg Blair, was #1. 1. LB Greg Blair (6-1, 252, 4.72) A 2011 transfer from Lackawanna Community College, Blair burst onto the scene at Cincinnati with 138 tackles, 2.5 sacks and two interceptions from the middle linebacker spot as a first-year starter in 2012. While he exhibits strong instincts and a physical, down-hill approach against the run, he also displays impressive awareness and anticipation in space when dropping into coverage. He's not incredibly fluid in reverse and lacks an elite first step when asked to break down and redirect, but he diagnoses early and will take good angles to compensate. He's also a bit "top-heavy" and might need to shed some weight to generate better explosiveness and suddenness, which would project more versatility and ultimately, higher value to pro scouts. Granted an additional year of eligibility for the 2013 season, Blair will have a shot to emerge as one of the '14 class' best linebacker prospects. The other 4 Bearcats listed were Austen Bujnoch, Brendon Kay, Deven Drane and Anthony McClung. There are some things to work on for each of the other 4. Bujnoch needs to add weight and be more consistent, Kay has to work on his mechanics, Drane needs to cut his dreads and Anthony McClung needs to get physical. I may have made one of those up. A couple other Bearcats are named in the keep an eye on category. I won't spoil the article for you. I can't give everything away. I'm sure Blake Annen, Sam Longo and Jordan Stepp have already had people tell them that they were on it by now.
