HOUSTON, Miss. -- Recruiting in the Southeastern Conference already had plenty of stories. Chris Jones might have raised the bar.
The 5-star defensive end from Houston (Miss.) High School chose Mississippi State over Ole Miss on Wednesday morning on National Signing Day.
It wasn't as easy as picking up a hat though, and the regular SEC suspects aren't involved. Trade Alabama and LSU for Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
Ole Miss came into the picture heavily two weeks before signing day after Jones (6-foot-5, 255 pounds) made two late-night secretive visits to Oxford that stirred Rebel fans.
The twists and turns continued all the way into signing day as Jones said he didn't make a final decision until 6 a.m., three hours before hisnews conference.
"To tell you the truth I considered flipping. I was 80 percent on flipping until this morning I talked to both coaches," Jones said. "I felt like Mississippi State was the best fit for me."

BEST OF MAXIM
College football coaches are a fickle bunch, often known for their inability to show any type of emotion, regardless of the circumstance. That's true on game-day, but also Signing Day as well, where admittedly even the best coaches wiff on a high percent of the players they sign.
So in essence, why get excited now, when you likely what know what to make of these recruits for...
The consensus top recruit in the nation Robert Nkemdiche has announced he will attend Mississippi.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end from Loganville, Ga., has been on several programs' wish list for more than a year, but Ole Miss appeared to be his destination for months because of close family ties. His brother Denzel Nkemdiche plays for the Rebels and he led the defense...
ATLANTA (AP) -- Robert Nkemdiche is just about everybody's No. 1 prospect on National Signing Day.
Rivals.com, Scout.com, ESPN, CBS Sports and 247Sports all give No. 1 rankings to Nkemdiche, the big defensive end from Grayson High School near Atlanta.
That's good news for Mississippi. Nkemdiche is expected to sign with the Rebels early Wednesday morning.
Hotty Toddy, Gosh Almighty, the Ole Miss Rebels are recruiting everybody! “The Perfect Storm” is the best way to describe Ole Miss’s 2013 recruiting class. ESPNU should have been called “The Ole Miss Sports Network” after all the coverage they got on National Signing Day. Head Coach Hugh Freeze and his coaching staff have literally beaten out all the competition when...
Robert Nkemdiche signed with Ole Miss today. Head Coach Hugh Freeze is rounding out a nice class with Nkemdiche as a nice addition. The nation’s number one overall recruit was down to LSU, Florida, and Ole Miss. The five star defensive end will be a force to be reckoned with in the SEC.
The nation's No. 1 player in the nation for 2013 has been compared to Reggie White numerous times.
Loganville (Ga.) Grayson defensive end Robert...
One of the great Signing Day traditions across college football is the rampant- at times, comical- accusations of cheating. Ask just about any fan, from any school, and every team in the sport is cheating. Well, except theirs of course.
However, it’s not often that you get a player to talk about. It’s even rarer when they may have unintentionally implicated themselves.
Ole Miss basketball, fair or not, took a back seat to National Signing Day on Wednesday night. And to think, the Rebels were playing in-state rival Mississippi State.
