The No.19 ranked Utah Utes will open up their 2010 Mountain West Conference schedule this weekend, as they are set to host the UNLV Rebels. The Utes pulled off an impressive 27-24 overtime win over Pittsburgh last Thursday to start the 2010 season. The Rebels opened the season against a very good Wisconsin team, and wound up losing 21-41 on their home field. Looking at the college football odds for the upcoming matchup, the oddsmakers have the Utes coming in as 22-point favorites over the Rebels with the over/under currently sitting at 54-points.

The Utes were lucky to escape with a win in the first game of the season, as they really played some sloppy football at the end of the game and were penalized 11 times. Utah blew an 11-point fourth quarter lead, but was saved by an interception by Brian Blechen on the first play of overtime.
Outside of a terrible pass in the redzone that resulted in an interception when the Utes had second and goal from the two-yard line, quarterback Jordan Wynn had a pretty solid night, as he finished with 283 yards and three touchdowns on 21 of 36 passing. Two of those touchdown tosses went to Jereme Brooks, who finished the game with five catches for 87 yards. While Brooks caught two big passes for the Utes, it was sophomore DeVonte Christopher that really gave the Pitt defense trouble, as he hauled in eight passes for 155 yards and a touchdown.

The Utes actually outgained the Panthers 405 to 266, but three costly turnovers kept Pitt in the game. I was impressed with the way the defense played, as they held the Panthers to just 82 yards on the ground, allowing only 75 yards to running back Dion Lewis, who had nearly 1,800 yards last season.
UNLV did much better than I expected against the Badgers last weekend, as I thought Wisconsin could have won this game by a lot more than they did. The Rebels got an early present when Wisconsin’s quarterback threw an interception to Will Chandler, who proceeded to take it 19 yards for a touchdown. UNLV then added a late touchdown at the end of the first half, and only trailed 17-14 with two quarters to play. The Badgers however turned things on in the second half, and wound up scoring 24 unanswered points before the Rebels cashed in on a late touchdown pass.

It will be interesting to see who the Rebels go with at quarterback to start the game off, as last week’s starter Mike Clayton was benched in favor of Omar Clayton. Both quarterbacks threw a touchdown in the game, but Clayton really gave the offense a boost in the running game, as he led the Rebels with 59 yards rushing on nine carries.
Looking at the Odds: This is an interesting matchup when you consider the 22-point spread the Utes have to cover. Last year Utah only managed to win by 20-points, as they beat UNLV 35-15 on the road. The Utes really didn’t play up to their full potential last week, and I think we are going to see a much better football team this weekend. I believe you have to take the Utes to cover the 22 point spread, as my final score prediction is Utah 38, UNLV 14.
