After months of having to examine your lack of self-worth, college football season is back to fill the empty void in your heart. The 2013 season kicks off this Thursday with a bang, as the night features several marquee match ups. Strait Pinkie gets the party started with a brief preview of five notable games on tap for Thursday night, along with where you can catch them on TV. Now, go ahead and call in sick to work on Friday. Clowney prepped for the season by eating babies. North Carolina Tar Heels at South Carolina Gamecocks: ESPN, 6PM Some think this year may be South Carolina’s best shot at an SEC title, and the road to Atlanta starts with a stiff test against a Tar Heels squad that went 8-4 last year despite not being bowl eligible. The Gamecocks are an 11-point favorite on their home field, and the fans are hoping to hear a lot of ‘Sandstorm’ against a North Carolina defense that gave up 30-plus points six times in 2012. In year two under Larry Fedora, the Heels are hoping to light up scoreboards, but Jadeveon Clowney and the SC defense may have other plans. Utah State Aggies at Utah Utes: Fox Sports 1, 8PM The debut game on Fox Sports 1 is the Battle of the Beehive State. I smell a new trophy in the works if these two teams continue to match up, which may be a good idea after seeing last year’s 27-20 OT thriller. The Aggies came out on top in that one en route to an 11-2 campaign and a top-20 ranking to close the season. Coach Gary Andersen, however, took the Wisconsin job, and their maiden voyage without him will be taking on a Utes team hungry after a disappointing 5-7 campaign. Before last season, Utah had been to nine strait bowl games, including two BCS victories. Vandy WR Jordan Matthews has eagle claws. Ole Miss Rebels at Vanderbilt Commodores: ESPN, 9:15PM For the second consecutive year, Vandy opens up on Thursday against a conference foe, this time looking to extend their win streak from last year to eight games against a Rebels squad that is also hoping to crack into the SEC’s upper echelon. Last year’s game between these two in The Grove was a dandy, as Chris Boyd’s TD catch with 52 seconds left pushed the Commodores to a 27-26 win. Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Fresno State Bulldogs: ESPNU, 10:30PM This one has sneaky good potential. In Rutgers’ first year with Kyle Flood at the controls, they went 9-3 before dropping their bowl game to Virginia Tech. Much like Rutgers, Fresno went 9-3 under their new coach (Tim DeRuyter) before a disappointing bowl loss to SMU. Now, they hook up to start 2013 in a late night tilt that may keep you up late and unproductive on Friday morning. Trojan WR Marquise Lee enjoys running away from those in opposite colored jerseys. USC Trojans at Hawaii Warriors: CBS Sports Network, 11PM Last year, USC started the season at the top of the polls and throttled Hawaii in the Coliseum. Things quickly went south, however, and the Trojans finished the year 7-6. This season, they start the year unranked and traveling to the island. In Norm Chow’s first year at the helm, the Warriors struggled to a 3-9 finish, but they hope their fortunes turn this year against the Trojans by distracting Lane Kiffin with a full blown luau the night before the game.
