The Mets won their opening game of the 2009 season and it couldn't have been scripted any better.It's true they stranded 11 runners but the conditions weren't idea for hitting and while I'm sure it wasn't planned this way it did test the bullpen.Johan Santana pitched 5 2/3 innings in which he allowed one earned run on three hits and four walks while striking out seven. Manuel could afford to pull Santana in the sixth thanks to his confidence in the pen....The pen was spectacular over the final 3 1/3 innings in which the only base runner allowed was a walk by J.J. Putz. Green came on in relief of Santana in the sixth with a runner on and two outs not only did he record the out but he also retired the side in order in the seventh. Putz and Rodriguez worked hit less and scoreless innings to finish the game.Dan Murphy provided all the offense the team would need as he hit a solo home run and drove in the winner run on a ground out.
