It looks like it's time to dust off the old "the voices in your head don't count as reliable sources" line again. Jackson, MS TV station WAPT reported that “sources close to Mississippi State University’s program have said that football coach Dan Mullen is close to signing a deal to replace Joe Paterno at Penn State.” Mullen has denied the claims, which he called "irresponsible," and placed the blame for the rumors on unnamed "rival institutions."
“Yeah I heard about the TV report," Mullen said Tuesday night at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson. “It’s the most irresponsible reporting that I’ve ever heard of.”Mullen said he had not been so much as contacted by Penn State “or any other school.”Mullen, in town for the Conerly Trophy presentation dinner, then took it a step further.“I blame it on rival institutions trying to ruin our recruiting which we have dominated in this state over the past three years,” Mullen sa

Citing personal policy, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen would not address ESPN's report Tuesday that he is among the early candidates for Penn State's opening. Mullen spoke with local reporters Tuesday, and the Jackson Clarion-Ledger filed this update (read it here) from the session.
"Great. I'm sure I'm on on everybody's [list]," Mullen said...
Mississippi State head football coach Dan Mullen is downplaying reports that he’s a potential candidate for the Penn State head coaching job.
ESPN’s Joe Shad said Penn State has expressed interest in Mullen. One Jackson, Miss. TV station reported Mullen is close to signing a deal.
“Yeah, I heard about the TV report," Mullen said. “It’s the most irresponsible reporting...
