CHAMPAIGN, IL - OCTOBER 10: Head coach Mark Dantonio of the Michigan State Spartans argues with a referee during a game against the Illinois Fighting Illini on October 10, 2009 at Memorial Stadium at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois. Mark Dantonio is determined man. He hates Michigan, he will always hate Michigan, and there is nothing that can ever change that. However, he is also a gracious man. Dantonio and other college coaches from the state of Michigan are participating in a symposium on issues facing high school football and recruiting.

The Michigan State head coach initially sat quietly and respectfully as he listened to University of Michigan assistant, Jeff Hecklinski give an introductory speech. However, the mic’ed up Dantonio could stand no more when Hecklinski turned it into a recruiting pitch for Michigan. Dantonio cut him off and Helicklinski ended up taking a seat, embarrassed as he was put in his place.

“I really didn’t know how this would work in this forum; it was the first time we’ve ever done this and I just didn’t know how this would work,” Dantonio said. “I didn’t want it to be a recruiting (speech for only Michigan).”

Hecklinski chose not to dwell on the altercation, either.

“Look, I understand my place,” said Hecklinski, who thought he had a 15-minute window to speak about his program. “What took place, took place and it is what it is. There is no reason to rehash it.”

Yep, Danotnio has first made sure that the football team will no longer be pushed around on the gridiron by their in-state rival, or anywhere else.
