Boise State University entered the Maaco Bowl against the Arizona State Sun Devils as the number seven team in the BCS rankings. Yet, they were left out of a BCS game once again this season after suffering an earlier loss to the TCU Horned Frogs.

Don’t worry; this is not another column about how flawed the system is. I will not lobby here for a playoff. I will outline why bowl coaches should never come into the contest in a lame duck situation. I understand why this takes place. It is impossible for a team to hire a coach after the regular season and have him take over with his entire staff prior to the postseason.

This is precisely why programs should never terminate their current leader before the new year. It is essentially telling the players in the program that what they accomplished currently doesn’t matter. Viewers of the Maaco Bowl noticed Sun Devil quarterback Brock Osweiler cussing out the coaching staff on the sideline during the second quarter. It would be interesting to see a member of Notre Dame’s roster try to speak to Brian Kelly in this manner. Osweiler must have felt that he could do so because Erickson no longer had the power to do anything about it.

Both teams have disappointed this season in the Grand Canyon state. Mike Stoops’ termination also came at a curious time. Schools likely change regimes after the regular season to ensure that they acquire the candidate that is desired. It would be more beneficial to the school looking for change to wait it out, so the current staff can maximize the potential of the current roster.

Spring football practice is seen as extremely important at the major institutions. ESPN even broadcasts some of the intra-squad scrimmages of the top ten programs. Schools that are blessed enough to compete in a bowl also have the opportunity to practice for an extra month. This should be utilized not only to prepare for the postseason , but also to develop the players for future success in the coming seasons.

Arizona State also put fuel on the fire by having successor Todd Graham viewing the game in one of the skyboxes at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. I simply cannot comprehend the sense of urgency concerning the position when I consider the fact that Graham was only five hundred this season with his Pitt Panthers. It’s not like numerous programs would be beating down his door with his recent mediocrity.

As we have seen with the current chaos surrounding conference realignments, football is the only sport that is considered when forming alliances. This is especially the case now that Kansas University hired former Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Weis to take the head position for the Jayhawks. His credibility has already led to the defection of two prominent players to Lawrence. When this is pondered, the correct hiring of the head football coach is as important as who is the president of the university. If this sounds preposterous, think about the salary disparity between the two careers.
