America Least:
BU maybe looking to Detroit connections for its next head coach. Jeff Goodman, who despite being critical, continued his coverage of the Boston University coaching job search on his Foxsports.com College Basketball Blog. In his latest update he reports that this past Thursday Tennessee assistant coach Tony Jones interviewed for the Boston job.Goodman talks about the subject in his article, it would be an interesting choice considering he has no New England connections. He has been an assistant at Tennessee, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Toledo and Buffalo. He was born an raised in Detroit and has strong connections in the Midwest.
However, there is no questions if Jones is qualified. The man has been vital to Pearl in helping to rebuild the Tennessee basketball program. He was named one of the top recruiters in the country in 2007 by Rivals.com.
However, the news doesn't stop with Jones. Boston.com (connected to the Boston Globe) reported the other day that BU has also looked into Siena's Fran McCaffery. However, they state that it would be an unlikely pick considering he is the hottest mid-major coaches in college basketball. They believe he would be a better choice for the Virginia or Xavier job (only if Sean Miller leaves for Kentucky or somewhere else).
They do throw a good chunk of names out there, including Jones, and seem to think a front-runner will emerge sooner rather then later.
One name that would be interesting that is floating around the message boards is recently fired Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie. However, I think we need to take a step-back on that one.
The fact is with Gillispie being run out of Kentucky (and having a major coaching position open now), VCU's Anthony Grant being hired at Alabama and the NCAA Tournament in its final two weeks, the coaching carousel is going to start spinning even faster as the days go one. So strap in and hold on!
