GLENDALE, AZ - JANUARY 02: Running back Noel Devine #7 of the West Virginia Mountaineers runs for a 65-yard touchdown against the Oklahoma Sooners in the second half at the Tostito

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Mountaineers are expecting senior running back Noel Devine to be ready for Saturday’s game against (*sighs*) UNLV.

West Virginia coach Bill Stewart said today he expects his standout running back, Noel Devine, to play in Saturday’s 12:30 p.m. PDT home football game against UNLV.

Devine, who rushed for 1,465 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, injured a toe in a 20-14 loss at Louisiana State on Sept. 25.

“He’s doing a lot better,” Stewart said. “He’s had three treatments today already. … He wants to get healthy as much as anybody. He bounced around a little bit in practice and didn’t do as much as he wanted to do. Hopefully, tomorrow or Wednesday, he’ll get back on track.

“I really anticipate him being able to play Saturday and play a lot.”

As for playing the 1-4 Rebels, Stewart made it sound like his 3-1 West Virginia team was preparing to meet a Bowl Championship Series contender. He was especially complimentary of UNLV first-year coach Bobby Hauck, who went 80-17 at Montana.

“When somebody’s won over 80 percent of their football games, that surely gets my attention,” Stewart said. “Bobby Hauck is such a great football coach, and he did such a great job at Montana. I see Bobby as being a lot like Chris Petersen of Boise State, Dan Hawkins at Boise State before him (and) Houston Nutt at Boise State before him. He’s got young players, a lot of freshmen, redshirt freshmen in his two-deep.

“I think they do a great job in all phases of their kicking game, and they’re very sound.

“Let me tell you, Omar Clayton is a heck of a quarterback. Channing Trotter, we’d like to have him. He’s a senior, good-balanced running back. I like their receivers. (Phillip) Payne and (Michael) Johnson both make plays.”

Stewart said he wasn’t ready to comment on UNLV’s defense because he hadn’t gotten that far in videotape study. It would’ve been interesting to hear him try to hype a group that has struggled for several seasons.
