NorthWest Sports Beat:
First road test? Check.
The Oregon Ducks began Thursday night’s contest with a Marcus Mariota fumble on the first play of the game, but wouldn’t you know it, the team recovered in the blink of an eye and led the Sun Devils 22-7 at the end of the first quarter.
In Marcus Mariota’s first true road test, he showed his youthfulness early with a number of freshman mistakes, but he ended up looking brilliant at times as the Ducks took a 43-7 lead into the second half.
The Ducks are about as fun to watch as it gets in college football—on both sides of the ball—and with a 43-21 trouncing this week, they’ve proven once again why they deserve to be in BCS discussions.
Offensive Game Ball
ESPN’s Rece Davis had the quote of the night when he capped off Mariota’s 86-yard touchdown run with the classic zinger, “Aloha means touchdown!”
The redshirt freshman quarterback made up for his early mistakes with sharp passes and a breakout running game, but per the Ducks’ usual routine, Kenjon Barner was a complete workhorse against the Sun Devils this week.
Oregon came out on their first possession and gave all the momentum to Arizona State, but Kenjon Barner’s quick touchdown on a 71-yard run neutralized the score and kept the team from falling behind too much too early.

Having carried the ball 16 times, the senior tailback took advantage of a banged up ASU front line, as he finished the game with 143 yards and three touchdowns.
Mariota kept the offense balanced with his unprecedented willingness to throw deep, but it was all about the ground game when it came to the offense on Thursday.
Defensive Game Ball
In what has become completely predictable behavior by the Oregon Ducks, the team let off the gas and allowed the opposing offense to close the gap in the second half.
That being said, the defense was absolutely brilliant early in the game.
Dion Jordan had a key sack on third down in ASU territory in the first quarter, but he also made his presence felt in the opposing backfield late in the half.
Avery Patterson also deserves a serious honorable mention, as he was seemingly everywhere on the field making plays, but the most crucial defense play of the game—if such a one-sided matchup can have such a thing—came from Boseko Lokombo.
Boseko Lokombo picked off ASU’s quarterback with the team leading 22-7 in the second quarter. The Ducks would score on their ensuing possession, stretching the lead to 22 points, and officially marking this game a blowout early.
Special Teams Game Ball
In traditional Ducks fashion, Oregon pulled a fast one on the Arizona State special teams and went for two early in the first quarter.
Jackson Rice is the one who made the throw, but Rob Beard is the one who caught the tipped pass to convert the two-point conversion.
This team is full of tricks, and when you least expect it, that’s when they’re most dangerous.

University of Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota once again led the Ducks to an impressive win this week as they overpowered the Arizona State Sun Devils 43-21 in Tempe. That is not unique. What is unique is how he did it.Instead of depending on his passing prowess, Mariota, a 6-4 freshman from Honolulu, Hawaii, focused on the running game and blew the Sun Devils out of their own stadium...
Have you ever seen a team ranked too high in the BCS poll, and thought to yourself, “Give me a break”? Of course you have. More than likely that has happened this season, this month, maybe even this week. There are a lot of quality and highly ranked teams in the mix this year, and yet some of them, most notably #5 Notre Dame and #10 USC, and more importantly #2 Florida, seem...
Chip Kelly's high-octane offense produces a lot of scoring. I mean a lot. So, it is only natural that a crazy-looking one is churned out every now and then. Such was the scene on Thursday night as the undefeated No. 3 Oregon Ducks visited the Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe. Seen here is Oregon quarterback Bryan Bennett pulling a rabbit out of his hat and delivering a 2-yard...
TEMPE, Ariz. -- FOX Sports NEXT caught up with Oregon senior running back Kenjon Barner after the Ducks' 43-21 victory over Arizona State on Thursday night.
TOTAL DUCK MOVE
This is the kinda awesome college football fan warfare that we need more of. The Arizona State “A” outside Sun Devil Stadium was vandalized prior to tonight’s game between ASU and the Oregon Ducks. The “A” was painted green, and we can only assume it was by some rabid and loyal Oregon fans. The “A” [...]
Just a day after he posted on Twitter that he had decommitted from Oregon, Aloha running back Thomas Tyner announced via Twitter on Thursday that he is staying with his pledge to the Oregon Ducks.
LOTD Recap Another winner last night, as we teased the 49ers and Oregon Ducks, both down to -1.5, for easy covers. 49ers had to fight a little bit, but the Seahawks offense is pathetic against any respectable defense, and the 49ers needed to win the game more than Seattle, which seems to matter a great [...]
Oregon was down 7-0 after fumbling on their 1st play from scrimmage.
It would be the only time they trailed Thursday night. The Ducks used 143 yards rushing from Kenjon Barner and 135 from QB Marcus Mariota to fuel a 43-21 rout over Arizona State which quite honestly, wasn't that close.
Oregon's defense forced 4 turnovers and Arizona State's supposed #1 Pac 12 defense...
Arizona State defensive tackle Will Sutton got a "good prognosis" on the right knee injury he suffered in a loss to Oregon on Thursday and will be week to week, an athletic department spokesman said. ASU did not offer further details of the injury.
Sutton, who is second in the nation in sacks and leads the Sun Devils with 8.5, left Thursday's 43-21 loss on the game...
Oregon 43 – 21 Arizona State
Ah, the Thursday Night football game on ESPN. What a great way to start the weekend. And, with the start that this weekend had with Oregon’s 43-21 drubbing of Arizona State, this may be one of the best college football weekend’s so far this season.
If you didn’t get the chance to watch the game or check out the highlights from it, this will be...
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Kenjon Barner ran for 143 yards and three touchdowns, Marcus Mariota added 135 yards, and No. 2 Oregon manhandled Arizona State in a 43-21 victory Thursday night.
Facing its first true road test, Oregon (7-0, 4-0 Pac-12) turned what was supposed to be a duel in the desert into another we've-seen-this-before rout by running over the Sun Devils in the first...
No. 2 Oregon 43, Arizona St. 21. By BOB BAUM AP Sports Writer The crowd of more than 70,000 enthusiastically filed into Sun Devil Stadium, nearly all of them wearing black.
It would be what first-year Arizona State coach Todd Graham called a ''black out.''
Unfortunately for all who had relished this so-called test against No. 2 Oregon, blowout was more like it....
