TEAMS: Penn State Nittany Lions, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Duke Blue Devils
Hopefully soon, the Blue Devils won't start offseason until after the new year, but as the program continues to build, we here at the Duke Sports Blog will continue to cover the program.
So what is the latest?
Penn State Interest in Cutcliffe Rumors
The rumor mills is churning hard these days and David Cutcliffe is once again at the center or some rumors surrounding a big time job.
This time it is Penn State who is desparately seeking a clean break from the Paterno era that ended in disgrace and embarrassment.
Do a search on Twitter for Cutcliffe and you'll get countless reference to Penn State showing interest in the Blue Devils coach. But I really don't see Cutcliffe leaving Duke, especially not after he turned down Tennessee two years ago.
Having talked with one Penn State blogger and fan, I get the feeling that there is some familiarity and interest from Cutcliffe, but he doesn't see it happening either and that is good enough for me.
I think Cutcliffe has put too much time and effort into the program to just leave now. And after hiring a new offensive line coach it seems more than likely that Cutcliffe has his eye on the the spring and next season.
Nothing definitive, other than my gut but I think Cut stays at Duke until he hangs it up.
Duke Hires a new O-Line Coach
It didn't take long for Cutcliffe to hire a replacement for former offensive line coach Matt Luke and he didn't reach too far from his roots to get the guy he wanted.
Duke announced on Thursday the hiring of John Latina from Akron where he spent two seasons as offensive coordinator.
Cutcliffe is well acquainted with Latina who worked for him at Ole Miss form 1999 to 2004. He also spent three season with Notre Dame as their offensive line coach.
Not sure if he will take over the running game coordinator role that Luke filled during his time at Duke, but his experience at big time programs makes him a great addition to the coaching staff.
Laken Tomlinson Honored
Duke landed its second All-American honoree, this time in Freshman All-American Laken Tomlinson. The Duke offensive lineman earned a First-Team nod from The Sporting News.
Tomlinson a 6ft. 3in., 310 lbs. redshirt freshman from Chicago become Duke's sixth freshman All-American.
The big offensive lineman started all of the Blue Devils 12 games this season and should, along with Dave Harding, should be an anchor on the offensive line next year.
Tomlinson helped Duke rank second in the ACC in sacks allowed.
