The story of Rutgers University football player Eric LeGrand is one that captivated sports fans throughout the world during 2011.
LeGrand, a once-promising defensive star for the Scarlet Knights, was paralyzed during a game in October 2010 against Army, and has been fighting a very public fight to regain some use of his arms and legs.
LeGrand’s progress has been followed closely by those with both sympathy for his situation and respect for his desire and determination to walk again.
Now able to sit up straight under his own power, LeGrand led Rutgers onto the field in November against Army in his motorized wheelchair, fully decked out in his Rutgers gear.
The moment has been voted by fans of Sports Illustrated as 2011′s Moment of the Year. For the first-time in the 57-year history of the magazine, SI gave fans the opportunity to vote for the year’s best sports moment, and I would say they did an outstanding job.
Eric LeGrand has said that he knows exactly what he will do when not if he walks again. He’ll go to Giants Stadium where he received the paralyzing hit, lay down in the spot where it occurred, get up, and walk off the field under his own power.
Anyone doubting that he will do just that, has very misplaced doubt.
