Florida States already strong 2012 signing class got a cherry-on-top commitment on Friday afternoon from the nations top dual-threat quarterback.
Jameis Winston made his signing to FSU official two days after National Signing Day because he was competing in a college football all-star game in Texas.
Winston has thrown for 6,268 yards and 57 touchdowns in the past three seasons at Hueytown (Ala.) High. He also ran for 2,350 yards from 2009-11. Winston is a five-star in Scout.coms rankings and the No. 2 quarterback in the nation behind Notre Dame early enrollee Gunner Kiel.
Jameis is a true impact guy, FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher said. He can be a great player for us. Not only from his physical standpoint, but from the way he approaches the game, the competitiveness which he has and the demand for excellence he puts on himself. He brings a lot of things to the table.
Winston is also a standout baseball player who was recruited as much by FSUs football staff as by the Seminoles baseball coaches. Baseball America ranks him as the No. 64 prospect in the nation.
He will be a great young man to have in the clubhouse and certainly his athletic ability speaks for itself, FSU baseball coach Mike Martin said. We are going to look at Jameis as both an outfielder and a pitcher.
While he could be an early pick in the Major League Baseball draft in June, Winston has said he intends to play both sports in college.
If he does pass up a pro contract, Winstons signing ensures that FSUs football team is loaded at quarterback for the future. EJ Manuel is entering his senior year, and FSU also has three other quarterbacks: Clint Trickett, Will Secord and Jacob Coker. FSU also signed quarterback Sean Maguire on Wednesday.
Winston gives FSU six players who are five-star prospects in Scout.coms rankings. Defensive ends Mario Edwards Jr. and Chris Casher, defensive tackle Eddie Goldman and defensive back Ronald Darby all signed with FSU on Wednesday. Tailback Mario Pender enrolled early at FSU and will be able to practice this spring.
