Running back Matt Jones broke out of a two game slump and dominated the Kentucky Wildcats. (Photo credit: Mark Zerof/USA Today Sports) The Florida Gators (3-1) defeated the Kentucky Wildcats (1-3) for the 27th straight time Saturday night to the tune of a 24-7 victory in Lexington. Behind a breakout performance from sophomore running back Matt Jones and another solid performance from redshirt junior quarterback Tyler Murphy, who was making his first career start, the Gators easily disposed of the Wildcats. Jones was clearly the star of the game. With his starting status in question, due to two fumbles in his first two games back from injury, Jones rose to the occasion in a big way, rushing for a career-high 176 yards and one touchdown on 28 carries. His 176 yards rushing was more than Kentucky’s offense was able to generate the entire game (173 yards). Meanwhile, Murphy proved he was more than just a one-hit wonder after his strong debut against the Tennessee Volunteers. He completed his first 11 passes of the game and accounted for two total touchdowns, one on the ground and one through the air. He finished 15-of-18 for 156 yards with one touchdown and one interception, although the game was already out of reach by the time he threw the pick. He also added 36 yards rushing on seven carries and one touchdown. The win marked yet another dominating performance by the Gator defense. Florida held Kentucky to just 173 yards of total offense, including just 48 yards rushing, both well below Kentucky’s season averages. The Wildcats were also just 1-for-8 on third down conversions. The performance further solidified Florida as one of, if not the best defense in the entire country. The win allows the Gators to close the week on a positive note after losing starting quarterback Jeff Driskel and star defensive tackle Dominique Easley to season-ending injuries. Now, Florida will return home and turn their attention to their next Southeastern Conference foe, the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Florida Gators: Matt Jones steps up his game

When Florida Gators running back Mike Gillislee (Florida’s first 1,000 yard rusher since 2004) graduated in the spring, it seemed there would be nothing to worry about, because it was clear who his heir apparent was at the position. Despite the arrival of highly touted freshman Kelvin Taylor and Adam Lane, it was always Matt Jones’ job to lose. Jones served as Gillislee’s backup...

Video: Florida Wideout Quinton Dunbar Tackles His Own RB, Saves Kentucky A Touchdown

Florida wide receiver Quinton Dunbar is going to get an earful at halftime from coach Will Muschamp. Dunbar, while trying to block downfield for his running back, Matt Jones, accidentally pushed him down 10 yards short of the goal line when Jones had a clear path to the end zone. Florida went on to score on a Trey Burton touchdown pass from Tyler Murphy, but it took a few more plays...

Know Your Opponent: Florida Gators

The 20th ranked Florida Gators will come into Commonwealth Stadium with a brand new starting quarterback. Offensive line health benefitting offense

The Florida running game struggled to start the season. Matt Jones was battling back from a viral infection and the offensive line was banged up, struggling to put the healthy unit on the field. As the Gators prepare for Arkansas this Saturday, they have their healthy offensive line with Jones off his best game of the season. The healthy offensive line has jumpstarted Florida’s rushing attack.

Easley a part of the win

Florida sophomore BUCK Dante Fowler brought a not so friendly reminder of the Gators fallen defender Dominique Easley on the trip to Kentucky Saturday for the matchup with the Wildcats. Easley’s trademark doll Chuckie from the horror movie “Child’s Play” was part of the escort on the road and to the stadium and in the hands of Fowler. As for the game itself, they wanted to play for Easley.

Murphy comfortable in first start

The preparation didn’t change for Tyler Murphy. He has been preparing for every game as a starter in recent years, so last week didn’t provide much of a difference. His play on the field showed it. The junior quarterback was in command of the Florida offense, checking plays at the line of scrimmage and making throws down the field when they were open.
