The start of football games is upon us and this weekend features the Hall of Fame Game between the Washington Redskins and the Indy Colts.
A FEW RULES FOR PRESEASON GAME-WATCHING
- Don't forget to make sure you know the level of competition in the game -- who is playing against whom.
- Always look for the one in the position of personal protector on the second punt team -- he has a good chance to make the team in a third or fourth string role.
- Study who is on ALL the kicking teams and know who makes tackles in that area.
- This weekend, the games are about players, not schemes. Players should not make many mental mistakes. If they do, they are not going to make the team.
- Have a computer near your TV. If a player makes a play, search his background and study how he got to the team.
- Players that jump offsides are either tired or not concentrating.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN THE GAME
- Don't judge the Colts as a team, because their full team won't be playing. Focus on offensive left tackle Tony Ugoh. See if he has gotten any better and if he can handle the second-team defensive ends of the Skins. He better be able to do that....
- How does Charles Johnson handle the starting role as the new right guard?
- How does Mike Pollack play?
- How does Fred Davis block in pass protection and the running game?
- How do the Skins' back-up offensive linemen look? Can they block the back-up DLs of the Colts?
- How well does the Skins' DS tackle?
