Eddie Lacy of the Alabama Crimson Tide ended up a 2nd round NFL Draft pick, and the fourth running back taken. As there’s no stud running back in this class. I thought Eddie Lacy would be first. Montee Ball was the third running back taken in the Draft behind North Carolina’s Giovani Bernard (Cincinnati – 37th overall) and Michigan State’s Le’veon Bell (Pittsburgh – 48th overall). The Green Bay Packers were rumored to be interested in Ball, but didn’t get the chance to take him and opted to select Alabama’s Eddie Lacy 61st overall, just three picks later. In the national championship game DESTRUCTION of Notre Dame, Eddie Lacy was named the Offensive MVP after rushing for 140 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Eddie Lacy declared early for the NFL Draft meaning the Tide now turns from Mark Ingram to Trent Richardson to Eddie Lacy to Derrick Henry. The very recent tradition of superlative Alabama Crimson Tide running backs continues with the kid who broke the all time high school rushing record. The selection of Lacy marks the ninth Alabama player selected in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft in the past two years. The Crimson Tide had a run of three straight players selected in the first round on Thursday evening with Dee Milliner going to the Jets at No. 9, Chance Warmack to the Titans at No. 10 and D.J. Fluker to the Chargers at No. 11. In the past five NFL Drafts, Alabama has had 22 players selected in the first three rounds. That includes 14 players in the first round, four in the second round and four in the third round. In those five drafts during the Saban era, a total of 28 players have been draft so far. It’s a brave new world. The days of Trent Richardson and Cedric Benson going top 5 in draft are long over. You’ll often see the first RB go in round two or three now. Moving forward, the top of the draft will be dominated by passers, pass-rushers and pass protectors. Rushers? Sorry, you’re lower priority now. Paul M.
