Frank Beamer is used to coaching big games. In fact, it's what he looks forward to. Luckily for him, Virginia Tech has two coming up: back-to-back Thursday night games against Miami and Florida State. The Hokies' clash against the Hurricanes brings together the two most successful Thursday night teams in the conference, with Miami coming in at 15-3 compared to the Hokies' mark of 19-5. Beamer couldn't really explain his teams' success on Thursday nights not even how well they have done on the road in such hostile environments. When you're competing and there's a lot of energy in the place and there's a lot of excitement and a crowd that's very much into it, I think most players like playing in that type of situation, Beamer said. Fair enough, but the Hokies seem to benefit from that more than others. Must be one of the secrets Virginia Tech has used to become the beacon of consistency in the ACC, a title bestowed upon the Hokies by Miami coach Al Golden. Golden had more high praise for the Hokies, noting that the ACC title has gone through Blacksburg for the last few seasons, and calling them too good, too mature, and too experienced to possibly look forward to an ACC Championship Game berth. But that's exactly what's on the line for the Hokies and Hurricanes. Miami is coming off a schedule Golden calls about as brutal as anything I've seen, and used the bye week to rest, get healthy and mature, practicing in pads just twice. If they manage to overcome Virginia Tech on Thursday, their schedule all of a sudden looks much kinder, and Golden can perhaps afford to sneak a peek ahead to Charlotte. Beamer, on the other hand, will have another juggernaut to deal with next week when Florida State comes to town. The Hokies have played consecutive Thursday night games in recent seasons, so the schedule doesn't throw them off too much. Like Golden, Beamer likes the extra few days to rest up. They'll need it against the Seminoles, who have scored 132 points in their three games since losing to North Carolina State, and have a bye week of their own while Tech and Miami negate theirs on the field. But that's Beamer's bread and butter. When you get to this time of year and get this kind of opportunity, you look forward to that, Beamer said. You'd be hard pressed to find another coach looking forward to consecutive games against Miami and Florida State. Though, to be fair, you'd be hard pressed to find another coach like Frank Beamer at all, and it's the main reason Virginia Tech has any chance at the ACC Coastal title in 2012.
