Two teams, on course for a possible Orange Bowl matchup, instead relegated to a minor bowl in North Carolina. But wait, the fans will travel, especially between a team familiar with bowl status and a team still trying to remove itself from the basketball shadow that usually dominates school talk. We got two good teams in a bowl that will help someone get back on their feet after a late-season stumble. It's time to preview the Meineke Car Care Bowl!
Meineke Car Care Bowl
West Virginia vs. North Carolina
Dec. 27th, 1 PM, Charlotte
About the Bowl: This bowl has some good interesting subplots. The key will be how West Virginia's O-line, led by the left tackle Ryan Stanchek and left guard Greg Isdaner, can set up their zone blocking scheme to open the run game, especially against staunch defensive tackles Marvin Austin and Cam Thomas, with E.J. Wilson and Robert Quinn on the outside. Also look for the defensive backs, led by CB Kendrick Burney (71 tackles) and safeties Deunta Williams and Goddard to play up and assist the run game a bit more, possibly forcing White to find some open passing lanes to WRs Jock Sanders and Alric Arnett, or out of the backfield to Devine. On the other side, the underrated pass defense of West Virginia (14th in the FBS), should hold their own against the erratic play of T.J. Yates and the possible switchup with Sexton. However, they will need to establish a strong run defense, led by nose tackle Chris Neild of the 3-3-5 defense WVU likes to run. If UNC can establish a good running repoire behind Draughn and Houston, look for UNC to put it away easy.
