Illinois' stellar defensive end Whitney Mercilus will enter the NFL draft, he announced Tuesday.
The Fighting Illini basketball team knew it would be in for a battle when it played a gritty Purdue squad at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette Saturday. The Illini stayed in it for the first half, but Purdue kicked into an extra gear in the second half and ran away with a 75-60 win.

The Fighting Illini basketball team has a tough assignment Saturday. It travels to Purdue, where the Boilermakers are unbeaten this season. No one on the Illinois team has defeated Purdue, and this road tilt will be no easy win either. The young Illini need to grow up fast to overcome the difficulty of playing an aggressive Purdue team in its home lair.

Purdue beat Illinois 75-60 on Saturday. Brandon Paul scored 17 points and D.J. Richardson had 15 points and six rebounds for the Fighting Illini (12-3, 1-1), who have lost three of their last five games. Purdue led at halftime 26-24, then started the second half on a 26-5 run.
