Tray Matthews, 6’0 194lb Safety, is the next Georgia Bulldog signee that we are going to take a look at. Matthews is from Newnan, GA where he played his high school football at Newnan. He was coached by Mike McDonald during his high school career. At the end of Matthews senior season he was named to the PrepStar Dream Team 150, 2012 Georgia Sports Writers Association Class AAAAA 1st Team All-State, 2012 Atlanta Journal-Constitution Class AAAAA All-State defense, and participated in the 2013 Army All-American Bowl.
Matthews was a 4-Star Prospect according to Scout (9th S, 99th Overall), Rivals (7th S, 6th overall in Georgia, 72nd overall), ESPN (10th S) and 247sports (13th S, 9thoverall player in Georgia, 99th overall player). On August 13th 2011, Matthews committed to the University of Georgia and signed with the Bulldogs in February 2013. He chose the University of Georgia over Alabama and offers from 18 other schools at the time. When Matthews high school head coach was asked how Tray compared to Alec Ogletree, this was his response.
“They are very similar with their physical style of play,” McDonald said. “Tray may have a bit better ball skills than Tree at this point of his career, while Tree may have been more explosive with his tackling.”
I had the opportunity to see Matthews play live multiple times and watch him on film a good bit. I will say this about Matthews; I did not see another safety in the country that was “college ready” as much as Tray. He is as good as I saw with his ability to make tackles in the open field. He is also a “big hitter” that does not shy away from contact. He has extremely good closing speed and he will be a safety that can play in the box and make plays behind the line of scrimmage. Most big hitting safeties struggle in coverage, but Matthews is one that does not. He understands his role at this position. He has very good instincts and great ball skills while the pass is in the air. He played a good bit of wide receiver in high school so he had great hands. He was expected to make an early impact in Athens after UGA lost their top two safeties to graduation (Rambo and Williams) but no one expected him to earn a starting position before Spring Practice was over. That is what Matthews has pretty much done as he is taking most of the reps with the first team defense at Strong Safety.
While evaluating him, nothing BIG noticeably stood out in Matthews game that I would label a weak point. He has all the tools to be a big time player; he just needs to continue to work on fundamentals. Learning the playbook will be the biggest thing. Matthews needs to get a little quicker and also develop man-to-man coverage skills where he can drop down and man up on a tight end. But let’s be honest, Tray Matthews is everything Todd Grantham is looking for at Strong Safety and he will be a key to the Bulldogs success on defense in 2013.
In 2013 I believe Matthews will earn a starting position outright and start the opener against Clemson. Matthews and JHC bring a safety tandem that not only will lay the wood, but also have very good coverage skills.

One word comes immediately to mind when I think about the 2013 Georgia Bulldogs’ defensive unit: HUNGRY. So much discussion is being had about the loss of big-name guys like Jarvis Jones, Bacarri Rambo, and Alec Ogletree, that most people are expecting the Dawgs’ defense to fall hard on their collective arse in 2013. After all, the schedule is harder, the teams around them...
Mark Richt has been the head coach of Georgia’s football program since 2001. With only 2 SEC titles and 3 BCS Bowl appearances during that time, perhaps Richt thinks his time in Athens might be nearing an end. He put his Hartwell, Georgia mansion on the market for just $2 million.
Hartwell, which is located about an hour from the Athens, GA campus, provides a nice lake front escape...
Richt, noted butt-dial enthusiast and swing set daredevil, has returned to Twitter after taking an extended break. After signing up in 2009, Richt became bored with Twitter, most likely because he was not getting a steady diet of animal GIFs, which compose 95% of all tweets, AS THEY SHOULD.
After being shown a glimpse of the delightful world of animal GIFs, as well as realizing...
The Georgia Bulldogs are getting ready for a huge 2013 season by working tirelessly throughout Spring practices.
All you need is $2 million and the lake house mansion of Georgia Bulldogs coach Mark Richt is yours.

Where is Bauta?
In all seriousness: where is Faton Bauta? By all accounts he’s the hardest working guy you’ll ever meet. He was listed as 6-3, 225 coming out of high school and runs a 4.55. He had offers from Bama, Louisville, Miami, West Virginia and others. But he can’t find the...
It seems Georgia head football coach had a little accident or two in his pants recently. Fourtinetly it was of the technological kind, and not the kind Triple H had on WWE RAW a few weeks ago. It seems he's been sending tweets from his pants when he sits down.
Yes, let's get these out of the way right now:

The Bulldogs' traditional SEC opener with South Carolina will be played in Week 2 in 2013, after a one-year move to the middle of the schedule. Lose that, and it's hard to imagine a...
Now that Manti Te’o’s pro day is over at Notre Dame, the question is how much did Te’o improve his stock. The answer is not much. That’s not to say that Te’o’s improved 40-yard dash time or his 21 reps in the bench press weren’t good. His 4.7 time in the 40 was a tenth of a second better than what he ran at the NFL Combine last month. Te’o did help himself, but the...
Te'o Feels Good About Pro Day (Video). Many draft experts are projecting Notre Dame ILB Manti Te'o as a mid to late first round pick. Most had Te'o in the top 15 before the BCS National Championship game, but his stock dropped some after his performance in the title game, a weak outing at the NFL combine, and of course, the drama involving the fake girlfriend hoax. With...
