Via any number of outlets by now (here’s College Football Talk, to pick one), you’re surely aware that South Carolina force of nature Jadeveon Clowney has spoken with Jay-Z about potential representation in the NFL. If you’re aware of that, then you’re also likely aware that by speaking with Jay-Z, Clowney broke no NCAA rules. Per CFT: Before this goes any further, it should be noted that Clowney is allowed to speak with agents. He’s just not allowed to come to a verbal or written agreement to be represented. Here is the NCAA’s rule, word for word, on an athlete’s contact with an agent: Under NCAA Bylaw 12.3, a student-athlete (any individual who currently participates in or who may be eligible in the future to participate in intercollegiate sport) may not agree verbally or in writing to be represented by an athlete agent in the present or in the future for the purpose of marketing the student-athlete’s ability or reputation. If the student-athlete enters into such an agreement, the student-athlete is ineligible for intercollegiate competition.
