It took him three years, a brilliant junior campaign opposite an albatross of a defense and a much-publicized black eye. But somewhere along the way, Jimmy Clausen managed to get a decent haircut and largely shed the "prima donna" label that had dogged him since his infamous "I'm going to Notre Dame" press conference at the College Football Hall of Fame as a spiky-haired, ring-flashing high school junior. Anyone who could gut out one of the most impressive statistical seasons in Irish history amid the death throes of the Charlie Weis era -- two-thirds of it on a bum ankle that required postseason surgery -- must have a little gumption.
For his sake, I hope so, given the likely reaction in his future NFL locker room after Clausen posed for the front and back covers of the next edition ESPN Magazine -- once as himself, and once as the model for the corporately generated fantasy quarterback of a wholly imaginary future to promote the DVD release of last year'...
