Quarterback Matt Barkley will miss Southern California's regular-season finale against No. 1 Notre Dame on Saturday with a sprained right shoulder.
Coach Lane Kiffin announced Sunday that freshman Max Wittek will make his first career start in place of Barkley.
Barkley was injured in the final minutes of the Trojans' 38-28 loss to UCLA when he was sacked by linebacker Anthony Barr. Barkley stayed down on the field for a long moment, and Wittek replaced him on USC's final series.
''I feel bad for him and his family,'' Kiffin said. ''This is obviously not how you want it to be.''
A four-year starter at USC, Barkley was a strong Heisman Trophy candidate last season and again this summer after electing to return for his senior year. Instead, his final season at USC has been just as inconsistent as the Trojans (7-4, 5-4 Pac-12), the preseason's No. 1 team.
USC dropped out of the Top 25 on Sunday after its third loss in four games. The No. 15 Bruins held on at the Rose Bowl for just their second win over the Trojans in 14 years.
Barkley has passed for 3,273 yards and 36 touchdowns, but has thrown a career-worst 15 interceptions. He became the career leader in multiple statistical categories at USC and in conference history, yet his decision-making and accuracy have been spotty at times.
But Barkley has been a steadfast leader throughout the Trojans' recovery from crushing NCAA sanctions, speaking for his teammates during the program's roughest times. He had been looking forward to his first chance to face Notre Dame at home before the Trojans' bowl game.
Barkley will miss just the third game of his USC career, but his second against Notre Dame. He also sat out the Irish's visit to the Coliseum in 2010 with a sprained ankle, and backup Mitch Mustain led the Trojans to a 20-16 loss - but only after Ronald Johnson dropped a sure touchdown pass from Mustain with 1:22 to play.
Kiffin doesn't yet know whether Barkley will be able to play in the Trojans' bowl game. The quarterback sprained an AC joint in his shoulder, and the team doesn't know the severity of the injury.
The 19-year-old Wittek is from the same hometown (Newport Beach, Calif.) and high school (Mater Dei) as Barkley. Wittek has played sparingly this season as a freshman after winning a competition with Cody Kessler to be Barkley's backup.
Wittek has completed eight of his nine passes this season for 95 yards and one touchdown.

SHOULDER THE BURDEN
Matt Barkley was supposed to contend for the Heisman and the national title as a senior, but instead, his year might be over following an injury during USC's loss to UCLA.
Yesterday UCLA won the battle of Los Angeles as they handed it to Matt Barkley and former preseason number one USC (let that marinade for a second). Jonathan Franklin sealed the deal with this sweet TD run followed by a throat slash. Gus Johnson caps it all off with a call of “U-C-L-A” as Franklin gives the gesture.
The throat slash is one of my favorite “post play” gestures...
USC head coach Lane Kiffin announced that senior quarterback Matt Barkley will be out for the game against Notre Dame this coming Saturday. Barkley suffered an AC sprain late in the loss to UCLA.
Without Barkley, Notre Dame seems like a lock for the BCS title game.
Of course this is college football and crazy stuff happens.

USC senior QB Matt Barkley will not start Saturday’s game against Notre Dame due to an AC sprain in his shoulder.Redshirt Freshman Max Wittek will start in his place. Head coach Lane Kiffin did not elaborate on if Barkley is available as a reserve, but we doubt it. The senior has struggled a bit in recent weeks, causing Trojans fans to lose patience, but they may not like the results...

USC Coach Lane Kiffin's press conference following the Trojans 38-28 loss to UCLA.
I've been patiently waiting. I've given Lane Kiffin the benefit of the doubt and took the whole 'wait and see' approach to Kiffin. The 'fire Lane Kiffin' bandwagon has been gaining steam for awhile now. Week after week, a few more people hop onto the bandwagon, and I've been reluctant to get on. I didn't want to get on it, but after yet another game...
Yogi Roth of the Pac-12 Network joins Fox Sports Tonight and talks about USC's next quarterback taking over for Matt Barkley.
The USC Trojans started the season ranked in the top 3 in both the Associated Press and Coaches polls, but after 4 disappointing losses have dropped out of the top 25 completely.
This has a lot of USC fans calling for Trojan coach Lane Kiffin to be fired. Kiffin has lost some big games this year by very small margins.

That was the slogan of a very popular t-shirt among young USC football fans a couple of years ago. It was a preshrunk cotton middle finger to Trojan haters. It meant “Yeah, our coach is an arrogant prick, and we love it because we’re better than you.”
Those t-shirts disappeared as quickly as the “Mike Williams Is Gangsta” shirts did in 2003 (those are so obsolete you can’t...
